    500 miles on the Hypermotard

At the risk of some meatball accusing me of propaganda.. I'll keep it short.

Between Friday at 5pm and this morning at 9am I put 500 miles on a Hypermotard S. I rode urban hooligan wheelie style in SanFran, knee-dragging squid on Hwy9, freeway bombruns at 11pm going 95-100mph, and supermoto spectacular down insanely bumpy and tight mountain goat paths.

All I'm going to say is I almost called in sick today and didn't bring it back. I feel like I'm born again...

Now I just have to wait a few months till I can get my own.. ARGH

Hattar Motorsports up in San Rafael CA (visited them yesterday) put the 2 into 1 Termi's on, the Ducati Performance seat, and dry clutch cover on their demo bike.

    Looked nice.

Yeah that was pretty crazy, you're lucky I was there for ya.

Anyway, you know, just sayin... A Hypermotard would put us back to even

For those not able to fly/drive to California, Seacoast in Derry NH has one configured the same way!!!

I am still breaking in my Multi1100s or would have tested the Hypermotard...others who did returned with big grins...and a couple were even looking at their checkbooks!

I'm hitting 55 to 65 miles before I see the reserve light. Reserve = .8 gallons or about 13 miles. My coworker ran out after 15 miles on reserve. Granted I'm running the bike pretty hard, but you aren't going to see over 70 miles per tank.

That's honestly the only gripe I can come up with, everything else is excellent! I'm having so much damn fun and enjoying this bike so much that I'm pretty sure I can live with short trips between tanks. I've never had a bike that goes over 100 miles per tank anyway.

I rode foot-out MX style all day yesterday on bumpy ass twisties up in the hills and today cruised into work at 85-90mph on the freeway. BOOYA!

Wow thats pretty terrible, I feel like that would be easy to get stranded when you are in the woods of vt. Thats a stop every 90 minutes or so.

    500 miles on the Hypermotard

I put a session in on the Hypermotard S at Loudon yesterday! I found it to be the first truly unique motorcycle I've ridden. I can guarntee that nothing in it's class is at all similar to ride. You sit forward like a motocross bike, but have the steep rake of a sportbike. It's a little strange at first cause you think it might get a little unstable, but it it doesn't.

In like one lap I felt right at home on it and was draggin pegs. That's a well sorted bike from the factory for sure.

It took me towo laps to get off the rev limiter, as I've been riding screamers for the last few years. Short shift the Duc and it scoots along really well. I saw 108 on the front straight with no signs of instability. Jerry topped it out at 116.

The brakes are from another planet, and I had to recalibrate my right hand to keep from over braking.

And the bike just knocks me out to look at to boot. Kudos to Ducati for really shaking things up!

    500 miles on the Hypermotard

I found the HM to be very much like riding a motard, but with a real motor. And as Paul says, the brakes are strong, if not a bit too sensitive. I really had to be gentle with the font brake to avoid overbraking.

The thing that I didn't like was the peg dragging. I'm accustomed to dragging pegs, but the feeling of touching down rather early in the corners, when I didn't expect it was unsettling. Once I got used to that and once I started hanging off more, the pegs became less of an issue. I was able to drag my knees almost everywhere while making sparks. Woohoo!

The handling wasn't as stable as I had hoped. It was stable enough to go very fast, but the chassis seemed to flex. I was conscious about being on top of the tank and being loose on the wide bars, which helped but it never went away. Paul didn't notice this, so it may be the way I was riding it. Don't get me wrong, it handles very nicely, I just though it would be more like a Duc SS, which seem to be on rails, if not a bit slow turning, which the HM is NOT! It turns on a dime. I flicked it into turn 3 and could have flicked it harder, but I didn't want to risk simply flicking it onto its side.

After 5 or so laps, I kept saying "this will be my last lap" thinking how bummed I would be if I tossed the beauty. But, I kept exiting T10 and my arm just wouldn't come up to pit in. Oh well, one more lap won't hurt. Eventually, I forced my arm up and into the garage I went. Jerry asked me how I liked it and even though i had some criticisms, I couldn't wipe the smile off my face, which says something, huh? (Jerry from Valley Motorsports in Northampton, MA was the generous dealer who brought the bike)

    Ken
