    Neither... DR

790cc big bore. Only took it for a quick spin but it rips pretty good. Street, dualsport, and occasional track day. SM wheels likely coming soon.

    +1. I feel.. played.
Maybe that's just from reading too much politicsness...

So I've been watching the list-of-the-craigs. You can buy a HELL of a lot of CRF250L for very short money. I don't love it.. but..

So someone spent crazy money making a shitty bike faster when they could have just bought a better bike for similar money?

    Re: 650 thumpers

Meh, “better bike” is in the eye of the beholder. Which is better, a new CRF450L that needs oil changes every 10 hours, or an XR400 that will run for decades on third-world gasoline? Different strokes.

Anyways... Took the DR790 out for a quick chilly 5 miles after work. Holy shit this has some low end get-up-and-go. Feels at least as quick to 70mph as my FZ6. The mfr’s dyno pulls show mid-50’s for hp. It does have the stock CV carb, so the throttle response is reflective of that, but I’ll wait until if/when I can find a deal on a pumper. PO reported no less than 45mpg on 87 octane. Anxious to see how it feels with a 17” front. Scored a cheap spare front hub, may try to cheaply lace up a 19” front, tons of positive feedback on that combo from DR owners.

For the type of riding I do, I’m finding I defintely like smaller bikes better. Thompson was a blast on my <30hp DR350. Heck I enjoy my backroads commute more on my 8hp Grom than on my 130hp Tiger.

Whatever makes you happy. I'm not one to judge.

But yeah, I'd rather have the CRF450L. The oil change thing is overrated.

Good luck finding a "cheap" pumper. Prices have gone sky high. At least for the sizes used on the DRZ.

show me a wee that has 240mm of travel, and just as importantly: electronic cruise control.
Also, there's an awkward moment in that clip where he goes over a dune, and it cuts weird. He eats it on the other side.

SWM Motorcycles USA - SWM SuperDual X - I like the reincarnation of the TE630. The price is right too

Oh, and I really liked the DR650 that I had in the past. Should have never sold Rusty...

Sumo wheels and top case installed on my big bore DR650. Been riding it to work this week. Makes a great commuter for my 14 mile backroads-only trip to work. Lot easier to ride to work than my Tiger 1050 was. Haven’t really done much highway with it yet. Also picked up a pumper carb for relatively cheap, hopefully find time to install that soon.

I’ll be swapping the street tires on the stock wheels to knobbier tires for some dual sport rides next month.

My fun Boston commuter is a CRF250L converted to M. With the pipe/header/EJK itís quite powerful - enough to hit 90 mph

A pumper for reasonable money is a score. Last I checked the carb for the DRZ-400 fitment had gone through the roof. Folks wanted $500 for a used carb.

Are you having any issues with gearing when you SM <=> dirt swap? That was one of my biggest headaches with the DRZ.. and now with the WR450.

The DR650 has a wide ratio 5 speed that is geared very well to switch easily. That is one of it's best features compared to the DRZ400. A common mod is to carry a -1 front sprocket while changing the stock rear a couple of teeth up. The ratio is quite wide so even just gearing one tooth down in the front is fine for the street and will let you do 70mph comfortably.

My sumo wheelset came with a sprocket which is the same size as the stock rear sprocket (42). I only did the sumo swap 2 weeks ago, haven't swapped back to dirt wheels yet. But like Dan said, the DR 5-speed is pretty well spaced with no complaints from the owners (unlike the DRZ 5-speed). I did a 15-20 mile I-95 highway stretch with the stock wheels, it did middle lane speeds pretty easily. I haven't done any highway with the sumo setup yet, only a few commutes to work. I haven't figured out what I'm doing with the speedometer/odometer yet (reads about 25% high with the sumo wheels) and the DR doesn't have a tach so RPM's are anyone's guess, lol.

    Re: 650 thumpers

I guess the big DR gets this. I didn't know. I have had this issue with both the DRZ400 and now with a "wide ratio" WR450F. Both have one of three choices; woods gearing with the 21/18 set, highway road gearing with the 17/17 set, or some middle-of-the-road compromise that interchange easily. I've resorted to adding/removing links using 2 masters on the WR.

My next enduro will not convert to SM. It will only run 21/18 wheelsets. Maybe 2 sets; one with dirt biased (ie Dunlop 606's) and one with street biased (ie Shinko 700's).
