Is power commander/bazzaz the way to go on these? I'm removing the cat on the exhaust and expect it will need a software tweak to run appropriately.
Keep in mind this will become a track bike in the future.

See if coober has an ecu for it.
Or Rottweiler.
Coober:
KTM RC390 17- - COOBER
I don't see one by Rottweiler.
How do these work? They ship you an ECU then you gotta go to a dyno? I like the option of having a lot of maps available on the internet to load myself so I don't *need to get on a dyno. Especially while in street bike trim.
Not sure.
I can ask the one other dude I know with the same whip when I see him next, should be within the week.
Bought a $50 kit with all the OEM screens, filters, and motorex oil and did the first oil change. Quite a bit of metal. As I went through the manual, they direct you to the website to "log your maintenance" but then you need a dealer sign-in. Then I noticed that warranty will be removed unless KTM does all the service and logs it in their internal website.

I put on the Competition Werkes straight pipe to remove the giant muffler, which leads to the Akrapovic slip on that I already had. I was hoping it would sound a bit more like the 450 thumpers...it doesn't. Thankfully not as loud, but not the right tone either. It's a little louder than I would like at idle, but short shifting keeps the neighbors happy. Guess it sounds pretty good when the revs get higher. I shouldn't have expected much from a single 390.
2 things:
There is definitely a big lag/chop in power if you pin it wide open from the lower revs. It was definitely there before, and I think its about the same now if not a little worse.
I would love a quicker throttle, but the 2018 is drive by wire, not cable.
This will likely lead me to getting the ecu sorted sooner rather than later. I've never had a power commander or a bazzaz unit before. I don't want to buy something and then realize I need to upgrade later. The rc390 forum is kind of a joke and I'm not really looking to join another forum at this point. Anything I will regret about either the PC or bazzaz units?
I will see said dude again in the next 2 days. I will make sure to ask.
That is against the law. Warranties remain valid with proof you serviced it at the required interval with appropriate parts/fluids.
Magnuson–Moss Warranty Act - Wikipedia
Of note- " Warrantors cannot require that only branded parts be used with the product in order to retain the warranty.[7] This is commonly referred to as the "tie-in sales" provisions".
KTM got some 'splainin' to do
Attachment 50980
The FTC has been cracking down on Magnuson-Moss violations recently. Drop a dime to them. I suspect that text is from the international one size fits most manual and wasn't updated for the US specifically, but it's flagrantly wrong in the US and KTM can and should get smacked down for it.
I would avoid Bazzaz after my experience. It failed in my second season racing, and I have since heard of 5-10 other failures just in casual conversation.
I did a bunch of digging last night. Seems like PCV is the way to go. RC390 forum had posts from forum sponsor Hard Racing Performance that provided a technique using the PCV and the dynojet wideband commander 2 to get around the closed KTM ECU to build a strong map.

I spoke with them today and they'll pre-load it with a map based on my mods. I hit the order button, will report back. Seems like the best option for me since this thing will likely never see a dyno. Sadly, they said I can't use this to speed up the drive-by-wire throttle and that I'm stuck with it how it is.
How did I miss you getting an RC? And you didn’t ask the guys that race them?! Hope you’re having fun with it.
I would have gone with the akra open pipe + PCV + wideband. If you ordered from hard racing it would be programmed to try and get rid of the lean tuning at idle.

Ha, I dunno how you missed it, guess it wasn't really advertised anywhere but here. It is incredibly fun on the streets of SF. The duke mayyyy have been a bit more fun, but I'm for sure happy with my purchase.
I probably would have went with a complete system as well, but the shop I bought the bike at waved a good deal for the slip-on in my face and I went for it. PCV + Wideband from Hard Racing definitely seemed like the ticket. Glad you agree.
The noise this bike is making is growing on me fast. Just took a few days to adjust to it.
Building a street/track bike is such a bummer compared to a track-only bike. My landlord would probably let me put something in the garage if I wanted to, but not ready for a second bike yet...not a good life decision either.
Ok, so that was kind of a bust.
His bike is a cup edition, and therefore came detuned for homologation in that rc cup series.
He said a slip on, your standard power commander and intake mods are what most guys are doing, along with a 418 or 413, whichever the number is, chain/sprocket conversion, which he said guys were generally getting a full season of racing out of.
That’s all I got.
I rode one of these at the track yesterday, decently setup on suspension/triples.
What a hoot! Made my SV feel like an overweight lumbering cruiser.
that's something I definitely didn't want to hear, considering you can grab a leftover (and they're everywhere) for essentially coffee money.
I only had a 10 minute session on it, and 3 laps were spent following my SV, so I only got one lap on my own to let it air out. If I could get a couple more sessions on it, I could certainly utilize it better than I did. Corner speed is the name of the game with this thing. SO light.
Agreed. I rode Cassie Cuppek's at Thompson and didn't give it back to her for 2 more sessions. Permagrin engaged.
