$500? That's the criminal penalty to negligence resulting in death? If memory serves, this person was so old they shouldn't have been driving anyway, so the loss of license bit is a given. But $500?!?!? That's more of a slap in the face, and isn't going to deter anyone.

the elderly need more transportation options. both my grandmothers quit driving in there 70's cause they knew they were a danger. they relied on family to take them shopping, docters etc... not everybody can do this. by no means am i making excuses but something needs to be done about this. how many lives could be saved every year if they could get rides when they actually needed them?

as far as detering anybody from doing this in the future how exactly do you do that? if they fined her a million dollars do you think that would change anything? people in this world don't learn anything until after the fact.

by the looks of things adam bell must have been a motorcyclist who got killed by this elderly woman. sucks to see that she didnt get fined more or had a harsher sentence. but i dont think giving her jail time would make much sense. instead as another member mentioned, the transportation system needs to be refined so that the elderly and others not fit to drive have a way to get around. its unrealistic to tell old people not to drive if thats their only way to travel.

Florida does - but only after a few tickets or complaints.

Personally I feel that ALL drivers should re-test for their license every few years. Nip the bad habits in the bud, and take them away from people who can't handle the responsibility of driving. My Mom lives in Boca Raton, FL - a few years ago a woman hit a pedestrian, and drove with the person dying on the hood and windshield of their car. When they pulled her over she didn't know what she had done wrong. She was driving herself home from her own cateract surgery...

I feel it's a shame that Adam was taken, and his family has my sympathies... It is also a token punishment to take away a drivers license for life from someone who's 89 years old. However - she has to live with the fact that she killed someone through her actions - for me, that would be the worst punishment...

Our dear friend Adam Bell was senselessly taken from us. On August 6, 2005 he was heading south on route 89 in Connecticut on his Triumph motorcycle. An 87 year old woman who was heading north indicated she was turning left, came to a complete stop and then turned right in front of him.

Thats the other tough thing; elderly people still need transportation, and they feel betrayed by the loss of freedom. My step-mother cured the problem by paying my 17 year old sister to drive her mother around, which was a win-win situation. Except, of course, for everyone else on the road, because that means my 17 year old sister is driving around....

Very true - That's why I feel ALL drivers should be re-tested. Granted, more of the elderly will lose their privilage to drive (not right) in the process, but a lot of the younger dangerous drivers will be taken off the roads as well.

I hate to play Devils Advocate here, but what do you guys think testing people would honestly solve? I understand seeing and hearing exams, but if you're refering to making people driving tests, do you think that will solve anything? When I was 16 1/2, to get my license I had to take a left out of the registry, take a left on a sidestreet, 3 point turn, and back to the DMV, does that prove I can really operate a vehicle safely? Plus, say we did have testing now, would any of you drive the EXACT way you do when youre away as when you have a state trooper sitting in the car next to you? Of course not, everyone would change their driving to pass the test, then go back to how they were doing it all along once the trooper is out of the car.
Obviously something needs to be done, but road testing people isnt neccessarily going to solve it, and just waste a lot of peoples time and tax money in the process.

really? I love it. I'm pretty sure 16.5 year olds still fail their driver's test. Hell, I bet people still fail the permit test. The test may be inadequit and ineffecient, but I bet people would still lose their license because of re-testing.
