My 690 is okay over long hauls.
You really need the seat concepts seat.
Tires that don't hum are a plus.
I got bar end weights for the barkbusters - not sure if that actually makes any difference.
I understand where Colin is coming from wanting a twin.
But if you're okay with the thumper, it'll get the job done.

I found 690 demos impossible to come by.
If you want to try mine, let me know.

I'd raise my hand, but it'd cost me around $7000...

    Oooph!

I know a guy in your neck of the woods that keeps telling me to come down and take his 1190 ADV-R for a whirl. What a day I could make of these offers!

    Thanks man.

I had my eye on a KTM street demo they were running in Manchester NH right after LRRS round 5. Unfortunately I fubar'ed myself at round 5 and was not healthy enough to make that. Seems to be 1 maybe 2 KTM demo days per year here in the North East. Stinkers.

CRF250L runs like a sewing machine. Way smoother motor and transmission than a WR250R, but down on power and suspension, and up on weight. Everyone who actually rides one on dirt says to upgrade both ends of the suspension. Stock knobbies are squirrelly on the highway at speed, but surprisingly grippy on the street. There are a couple different larger fuel tanks available for it.

Everything said above about the DL650 is true. If you're looking to put real suspension on a comfy road-biased stock bike, it's got a proper motor.

For the type of riding you described, many modify a DR650. There are relatively smooth for a thumper on the highway and in the proper experienced hands and with a few modifications can do well in most other terrains.

Honda updated the CB500 twins for 2019.
The new CB500X gained a 19" front wheel, a nice TFT digital display, a couple more ponies, a slipper clutch, and a bit more suspension travel (but still budget quality). 430 wet.
It's essentially a mini WeeStrom now. I kinda like it...

My wife has a 2016 CB500F ABS. I steal it all the time.

Highway cruising with bags it would be working hard, but is nimble and motor sounds like it will run forever. CB650, DL650, SDSU’s all have more power.
