Just because the car driver was 93 doesn't put him at fault. There is nothing in the story to alude to either one.

Well, there is a small picture, and it appears that the car turned left directly in front of the bike. This does not appear to be an intersection, either.

^^It does look like from the picture the car rear ended the motorcycle though. That would put him at fault.

    edit - Or that^ possibly.

And the driver of the car. So close to the end of his life...and this is the legacy he takes with him. FAK. Maybe it will turn out that he was impaired by his age. Seems likely I'd say. In that case he failed to limit himself, his family failed to limit him, and...dare I say it...the State failed at some level as well.

How many times have all of us come close to being taken out in similar situations by drivers who were definitely not age impaired?

I was nearly killed in such an accident in '82 by a driver who was about the same age I now am.

I have a vivid memory of a near miss a couple seasons ago when a young women beegan pulling out in front of me in broad daylight while I was riding my VN1500 with its two 55W passing lights glaring right at her!

When my rear skin screeched a bit as I jacked on both brakes she seemed to actually first become aware of my presence.

Yes, self awareness of one's capabilities is important... I know damn well I can't cut it like I did in my youth, those reflexes and reaction times just aren't what they once were, and forget the high speed night rides clear across states in one shot, no more! My near 60 yo night vision dictates a more conventional pace.

So far as 'the state' offering oversight of aging driver ability, well Yes, I suppose such measures do need to be considered, perhaps broadened from the basic mandatory eye exams now in place in many jurisdictions to other testing like peripheral vision, depth perception, scanning ability, reaction times, multi-tasking... those would be tough nuts for most old folks I'd guess since those are all the functions which deteriorate in an aging brain.

But where does the line get crossed wherein such measures become draconian, Big-Brother stuff? I'm not sure what that might be and putting it the hands of bureaucrats to decide? Hmmm...

an 88 year old driver 'confused the pedals' last season and accelerated full-force into the back of my truck. the light was still red. my foot never left the brake. ive been at that same intersection hundreds of times... on the bike

hoping for a speedy recovery for the rider!
