I owned an 11 Roadie and liked it a lot. I traded it last year for an XCx and it's night and day. I should have done it sooner.

MO Espionage: Yamaha FZ-7 Tenere Spy Shots
Should be a hit, 1200cc shaft drives are big girls.

So many good choices out there these days. I spent some saddle time on a bunch of these. The best I liked were ktm 990 for its engine, character and sheer fun and the gs1200 non adventure. It was a pre-water cooled bike. The tiger 800 was also a very good bike overall but did not stand out compared to the others. Maybe a little boring? Not sure. The GS was the most comfortable for my wife. I can see why they sell so many around the world. I'd go for a slightly used GS that is already farkled.
Anyone ridden a newer Super Tenere? After some research it looks like a lot of people on ADVRider love it, and you can find the loaded ES's with low miles for pretty darn cheap. Only thing I'm not keen on is the weight, 600lbs seems a bit heavy for a bike with 115HP.
A local dude just grabbed a loaded s10 for pretty short $, in that graphite color. Thing looks awesome, he LOVES it, and he rides it like a loon. The weight and/or lower power output aren't holding Big Norm back one bit.
Newer? No. I was not aware the differences were that great. I thought they just made the fancy-pants electronic suspension standard.
My take on the early model I demo'ed was that it was a nice, well turned out Yamaha. Solid fit, finish. Spanked of quality.
Has the nifty tubeless spoked wheels and maint free shaft drive.
But is heavy, not especially fast or exciting for the $$$. Not what I am after, personally.
I have a friend who is a BMW RT convert that adores hers. It strikes me as a nice step from the RT.
The early ones were the deal of the century recently. Dealers were getting ahold of new leftovers and selling them for like $8-9k. Which is epic for a bike of that spec. This undercut the used market badly. They just didn't sell as anticipated.
I demo'd one a couple years ago and found it totally underwhelming. The engine in particular did nothing for me. it reminded me of a BMW boxer, but with less character. Also wasn't as comfortable as I had expected, but that's just me.
I think the Super Tenere is a great big ADV bike, but its appeal weans off quickly. This is my suspicion given that you can find plenty of used bikes despite the face they did not sell new. I interpret that as a bike that was overpriced new. It is sort of like the VFR 800. It is a great overall bike, but was overpriced new. Suddenly, the market was flooded with left over 2007 selling for short money. Same thing with the S10 except it has much stronger competition. The Boxer BMW's are better when compared new. Slightly used, the Yamaha is significantly less expensive...
Brother has everything likes the S10 weight low and just grunts along with like zero shifting
I couldn't resist.

Anyone want a sport-touring converted TL1000S with around 65k miles?
Did the Freedom Cycle guys treat you right?
Daaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaayumm
i didnt read all the other suggestions, but the KTM 990 adventure should be something to consider as well. although its more dirt oriented. they did make a 990SM though thats more street.
the fugly-strada is another good used choice. if you can get past its polarizing looks, ive heard they are fantastic bikes.
EDIT:
looks like you pulled the trigger on the beast. love the white.
Woot! Congrats. Looks sick.
Hope you'll keep us updated on what you think of it as you get to know it. I'm lusting after an 1190 right now...
Mike Congratulations on the new SA, that thing is a beast! Glad to hear that you had a great experience at Freedom and that Hank worked a good deal for you.
Bitch. In.
Nice. My friend Tommy has a 1290 SA and loves it. Enjoy!
