If you are stopping without a real need to (ei, practicing), then if your skills are up to a marginal level, it's quite easy to detect a front end slide and let go in time. I've done it a few times on my Rex at 70+ on brand new pavement after a rain. Slow slow slow BZZZZZZZZZZ let go, check pants, keep riding knowing where the limit was.

Practicing isn't crashing. Practicing is trying NOT to crash if you ever get put in a situation where you need the practice.

+1 on the dirtbike. Locking up the front on dirt with knobbies is about the easiest way to learn. May not translate 100% into pavement, but it sure starts out the learning in a easy to grasp manner.

My wife is a perfect example. She took msf course and passed, got her endorsement no problem.
When she tried to ride out on the street, she just couldnt do it! I watched her pull out of our street to make a right and ended up on the other side of the road... WTF?

Just goes to show you, just cuz someone passes MSF doesn't automatically make them a competant rider. Takes alotta practice & seat time.

Back on topic... Sorry Fellas but if your not open minded and just out to pass it and not learn something the MSF class can be a joke.

That's why it is called the BRC, Basic Rider Course. It's not intended to teach you how to be a good rider. It is intended to teach you to be able to control a motorcycle without wheelying off into the woods, dropping the bike in a turn, forgetting to put your feet down when you stop etc etc. It gives you the basics to go out an learn to ride (in a parking lot if you still have trouble staying on the right side of the road). Also, people take the MSF BRC on a 250 nighthawk and then go home, jump on their 1300 harley and think that they know what they are doing.

Ooh, that's a good idea. I wonder why that hasn't been suggested or stated in this thread like 8 times so far.

    He already took the BRC!!

The weight of the bike at speed will be more evenly distributed on the front tire and may keep him off the brakes a little that way he won't be locking up.
I should hope so, since it's next to impossible to take corners on a streetbike WITHOUT countersteering unless you're going extremely slow. Even then it sucks.

How did you ride before you learned how to countersteer?

I'm wondering if you mean the same thing as everyone else here when you say countersteer.

I just did what felt comfortable, I may have been countersteering unkowingly or with out proper riding position.

If you ever seen the disney movie CARS, I'm talking about that kinda countersteering.

Just because you take a BRC, it doesn't mean you can go out and do what you like on a bike and this magical fluffy MSF fairy will come and ride next to you and keep you from trouble.

Eli, the brakes on the F4i are much more powerful than the drum brakes on the nighthawk 250, bear that in mind, too.

If you are going more than 8 miles per hour and cornering, then you are countersteering. "Ya canna change the laws 'o' physics, captain."

There are at least 4 or 5 exercises in the MSF class that use countersteering and evaluation 4 (cornering) is also countersteering.

    derek

Well, I rode dirt bikes for years with no idea what countersteering was... I'm sure I musta been using it but it's more rear wheel steering...

First time I got on a streetbike I damn near killed myself when I got to the "T" at the end of my street, tried to just turn... erm, no, not happening. Luckily I figured it out before I went through the house in front of me (now that I think about it I don't imagine I woulda been quick enough with the brakes after panicking on the bars).

I've never seen CARS, so I have no idea what a cartoon has to say about countersteering.
