Re: New African Twin Maybe 1200cc
You really can't compare a v-twin and an inline twin in terms of weight.
The reduction in moving parts is significant, along with fasteners, plumbing, covers, etc. It's not by half for a inline vs v, but there isn't a second independent cylinder with all the extra support mechanics involved. Combining that with what appears to be a minimalist approach (read: not a GS-A), it should be quite easy to hit that weight.
Re: New African Twin Maybe 1200cc
Then why is the Yami nearly 600 lbs? Shaft drive alone can't make that.
Conjecture aside, should be an interesting offering. Nice to see exciting things from Honda again.
Re: New African Twin Maybe 1200cc
No, it's because the Yamaha is a fat pig.
Making a bike light is expensive to do. It isn't impossible. Hell, look at the supersports. 1k's under 400lbs, way more brakes, fancier bits. You think an extra foot of suspension travel really weighs that much to justify the difference? No.

Tiger 800 XC: 475
F800GS: 460
KTM 1190 Adventure R: 520
V-Strom 1000: 500
Even the old XRV650 Africa Twin was around 485 wet, and that was in 1988.
450lbs is an ambitious target to hit, but Honda should easily be able to bring this bike in well under 550lbs.
By the way, for what it's worth, apparently the photos make it look bigger than it really is. I read somewhere that it's actually very similar in size to the Tiger 800 XC and F800GS.

I'd love to see a GS on an actual scale reading 505, but I doubt I ever will. I'm a realist with access to scales garage at loudon. No bike I've weighed has ever come in near what I expected. Sportbikes generally weigh over 400 pounds ridden onto the scales.

Granted, but that's kind of moot in this case. We're trying to compare apples to apples, in this case with manufacturers' claimed wet weights. I think we all accept that the OEMs use some sort of voodoo to make the bikes seem as light as possible, but it's still a useful comparison between models because it's probably a pretty safe bet that the OEMs all use roughly the same voodoo…

I'll still buy one heavy or not

More I read, the more I like.
Finally, exciting stuff from Honda.
Juuuuust about ready for a new street bike.

That "dry" weight would have to be ready to ride but tank mostly empty, because the gas alone would weigh about 34lbs (5.3 gallon tank, apparently). Either that, or the wet weight is ready to ride but tank mostly empty. Full tank plus oil/etc typically adds about 50lbs to the dry weight for this type of bike.
Though either way, it's moot because it's pure speculation at this point.

Re: New African Twin Maybe 1200cc
Since a new bike isn't going to happen this year, I've definitely been keeping my eye on this. This falls right in line with what I was looking at/for. Otherwise it's been 800xc or 800gs. We'll see what the pricing does.

New African Twin Maybe 1200cc
My guess is that this bike is going to be excellent off-road, but lack on road compared to the other big adv touring bikes. It will make middle of the road power and torque just like the rest of Hondas line up. Maybe, just maybe, it will be somewhat affordable.
Re: New African Twin Maybe 1200cc
It's quite a bit better looking than I expected from Honda. Sexy almost...
Re: New African Twin Maybe 1200cc
god i've wanted one of these (and a Transalp) since 87-88, exciting indeed, looks awesome.
Re: New African Twin Maybe 1200cc
Will it get you back on the street?
Re: New African Twin Maybe 1200cc
oooh i'd like to say yes ... but in Reality, doubtful. (i'd rather spend the dough on a guided desert tour, ala AdMo)
Re: New African Twin Maybe 1200cc
My hopes:
- 110 HP, per current rumors
- sub 450lbs wet, per current rumors
- decent, fully defeatable electronics package
- 21/18, rumor, seems to jive with everything shown
- Priced between KTM 1190 ADV and Tiger 800 XC.. $14k-ish .. some on ADV rider are speculating a $10k base package!
- Decent but not top-shelf brakes, suspension, components
Basically I want a KTM 990 or 1190 made by Honda, with all out performance dialed back a bit. I'd really like to own a Honda again.

What do you mean by this?
After riding the 990 and my DRZ this weekend, I am reminded how much "road manners" I am willing to give up. The 990 is pretty solid and pretty comfortable on pavement. I've seen a Tiger 800 XC (21" front) move through the twists just fine.

I'm so hopeful that they don't eff this up.
I have 0 confidence that they won't.
(Honda fanboi).
Re: New African Twin Maybe 1200cc
I can't wait to crash it. :poke:
Re: New African Twin Maybe 1200cc
The more I read, the more I think we may be able to arrange that one day.
It'll have crash guards actually installed though.

It only works if we go tit for tat. I've already collected the entry fee from Chip.
Someone cut the BS out of the video, this is more watchable.

Someone on ADV-Rider who supposedly has some super secret bullshit inside info is saying there will be 3 packages; some sort of base, some sort of tarted out with extra electronics, and tarted out with electronics and DCT.
