Except it is a Honda.
And looks better.
Spec weights are what we have when sitting in front of a computer. It's the only apples to apples comparison available. As always, a test ride would be way more telling.
I don't know about looks better, but they seem to have gone out and tried to check almost all the boxes. Makes the old ktm look like it has no tech, by comparison.
You'll have to crash the big girl again once all the boingers are done, the abs is gone, and an actual skid plate is mounted.
I might put the crash bars on for ya too.
Did you get to spin that motor up??
I spun it a bit on the pavement. Quite delightful. Re-invigorated my love for : big ADV garbage, V-twins, fat seats.
I tried not to be too much of a knob with it in the dirt. That had mixed results, as you know.
I can't believe I was seriously considering buying a fucking Harley. ADV geek 4 lyfe!
Big problem with the KTM 990 is they are hard to find. I did find an 8 year old one in CT for $11g's. Probably sat in a garage for the last 8 years. 1/3rd the mileage I have on my '11 'strom.
Couple more reasonably priced ones on the other coast. Seem to be few and far between. I've sort of been looking. Not something you find on CL every day.
I know I want no part of the 950's. EFI please.
I prefer the look of the 1190. The ADV R with the orange bars really sets me off. The electronics don't offend me either. Nobody is selling those used yet though. Dealers still want $17k. My expectation is that this Honda will come in well under that. I'm hoping $13k base... some on ADV rider are expecting $10k base! That's unlikely.
The sparse KTM dealer network and slow parts availability trouble my over-analyzing, risk adverse, inner engineer. For this kind of cake I want something I can just ride the piss out of every damned day without worry. Like my 'strom, just better.
I should demo a new DL1000.. after I fit a paper bag to it's head.
Fit the paper bag to your head. Then, and only then, it will be an exciting ride!
Meh, $7200 with ~10k wasn't too hard to swallow. I've only added luggage so far. Anything else I've sdone has been net zero.
I mean it will lack in the engine character. After watching that video, it seems like it has some pretty soft suspension from the factory as well. Honda always prices themselves out of a lot of people's pockets, and I'm worried this bike will do the same. They're entering a market that has a lot of die hard loyal customers who are invested in other brands. Besides the Honda faithful who will buy this bike, will this be good enough to pull people away from Suzuki, Triumph, BMW, Yamaha, etc.? I'm very skeptical.
The guys selling the kool aid on the interwebs are saying a properly uncorked, property tuned parallel twin should deliver enough twin love for us V-twin fans. Disappointed the twin engine doesn't yield a bigger drop in weight compared to the 990 & co. (As Clayton suggested it would months ago.) But then it is a Honda after all; everything they make seems to be heavy.
I think pulling customers away from Suzuki and Kawasaki is fairly easy. Buy a Suzi to get into the genre or motorcycling overall. Realize it is heavy, cheap, and has cheap components bolted to it. Go looking for something more up-market. Get turned off by the europeans and their price tags. Land on the middle ground; premium product for the asian brands, under cut the euros. Win.
Yamaha and Honda seem to be the brands to do this. Can't believe I'm the only guy that's been down this path.
The Yami Super10 is a GS killer. Problem is I don't like GSes. I like the KTM big ADVs. I want someone to slay that dragon.
Go Honda, go.
ive put a couple hundred miles on the 950 i picked up and the carbs work very well but i too would probably prefer FI.
but the power...oh the power! start getting up in the revs in 2nd and the front climbs all on its own
the best analogy i can come up with for the 950 SE-R is: its like a V8 wrangler. it makes a whole bunch of power so it goes pretty good on the street but it handles like an offroader. off road it handles itself pretty well but it has way too much power to finesse anything. just give it more throttle and hang on.
i wish i could keep it, but i think i want a 990+ adventure.
Speculation was 110 HP. Which I was psyched about. -15 HP on a machine like this is probably nothing. But there's some psychological bout being under 100. This is the same power as the Tiger 800 forchirstsakes!
I guess this has something to do with EU tiered licensing. Fuck Europe and fuck all of you that support that tiered bullshit. Gimmie the powah yo!
If you think NESR is a shitshow, go read ADV Rider for 15 minutes. Good frickin' god that forum sucks! "I'm here to complain about all the people complaining about the other people complaining about this motorcycle not being the unicorn fart generator of my wet dreams!"
For some strange reason I keep reading, a sucker hoping for more leaks.
speculation is the key word there.
i can speculate that the next gen R1 will be 225 naturally aspirated HP, that doesnt make it true.
why anyone would think honda would make some game changer bike is beyond me. they never have, or if they have it was so long ago that i dont remember. honda makes a lot of great bikes but none have ever been the fastest, quickest, lightest or anything else in their perspective catagory.
honda is japanese for "medium"
I agree with all of that. Still, I had hopes.
I still may be a buyer.
HP is a product of emissions and combustion efficiency targets they have to meet. Pipe and tune and you'll get it all back.
The "game changer" with this one, is it is heralded by Honda as being a legitimate 1000cc that performs well in the dirt. I wouldn't doubt Honda on that front, they take off-road (think Dakar, etc.) quite seriously. I think this bike will surprise some, and is the first of it's "genre" that I'm even remotely interested in. I hope it lives up to the hype, b/c sorry... Stroms and Multistradas are NOT dirt machines.
Was this already discussed? Basically a 990, but new.
KTM 1050 Adventure 2015
Theory on the 'net is that losing that tail pipe will probably be good for at least 20-ish lbs too.
The bad news is this is true for everything else on the market too. No competitive advantage.
Many are saying the only truly game changing thing with this is the "dirt tuned" DCT. Naturally, I have zero interest in this. But it is unique.
Devils advocate here. But what about the 1200GS, the KTM 950/990/1190?
Yeah, it blows.
Something tells me it is a bargain basement ish offering and hard to walk past the 1190 to that thing when both are sitting on a US showroom floor. I guess the 1050 ADV is primarily to fit in the tiered licensing baloney.
Pffffft, you crashed my bike, what makes you think you can handle another 50ccs??
Also: next time you do that, do a better job. There's a couple of hazy marks on the windscreen and that's about it. Literally nothing that: won't buff right out.
