    alpinestar gp gloves

hey guys anyone with the a* gp plus gloves? if so how do you like them? think they are too much for everyday riding? i have a pair or short cuff smx-6 gloves now so i want to upgrade. how is it having the cuff so high up your arm? and why is the ring and pinke finger stitched together?

The cuff going up your arm (gauntlet) is to protect your wrist and make sure there is an overlap in coverage between your jacket and your wrist. It is in no way uncomfortible. The stitched ring and pinky finger is to prevent a serious injury called pinky roll. I can not explain pinky roll so well, maybe someone else will chime in on this one. I have 3 pairs of street/track gloves (plus a winter set) all of them are full gauntlet gloves. One of the pair is a set of GP Tech gloves that I have pretty much retired since I ground through the palm on one of them. They are not too much for everyday riding. Right now, a pair of Held Phantoms are my everyday and track gloves.

The Held Phantoms are a bit expensive, 250 retail, but they (the Held brand) have the best range of sizes I have ever seen. I was sold on the ray skin palm since I holed the palm on my last pair of gloves. Also they are very comfortible. The padding in the heal of your palm takes a little to get used to, but after that, they are great. Check out Moto Market, they carry Held. So does Wagner.

As far as overkill for commuter duty goes, these are what I wear during my commutes. I also wear the same helmet that I use on the track, and a jacket with the same protection features as my 1 piece suit including a back protector. I admit that I wear jeans and Harley boots on my commutes since that is my work uniform, but on cold days I use a set of armored overpants.

I've had the GP Plus and the GP Pro gloves.

It pains me to say it cuz both pairs of gloves were awesome, but on both pairs, the first thing to wear out was the leather in the left palm. Dunno why it was the left palm for both gloves & in the same spot too, but that's what happened. They both lasted me about a season & 1/2 before wearing through, which includes a good amount of street (5-10k/year), but mostly track... and alot of it. (6-8 Race Weekends + 8-10 track days)

Although the palms wore out & eventually tore, the rest of the gloves held up great. In my last crash I ended up breaking my wrist but had I not had on a pair of gloves as sturdy as my GP Pro's I probably would have ended up alot worse. The knuckle protection worked wonders & I have no doubt it kept my hand from shattering.

I still wear them even though they have a small hole in the heel of the palm.

Top notch gloves have proved to be worth having, even on the street (especially now, to protect my surgically repaired wrist). My next pair will probably be another pair of GP Pros, Techs or Held Phantoms.

A* in general is overpriced. They used to be the pinnacle of quality, but now the only thing top-notch about them is their price. They are riding the reputation of their past quality, basically. I'm not happy with a pair of their GP Pro gloves I have. One of the seams started coming apart a little bit just from wearing them. That's bullshit.** They held up fine in a low speed crash, but still, I won't buy A* anymore. That's just my 2 cents, though, a lot of other people love them.

** I am going to write them a letter about my disappointment and hopefully get a set of GP tech's out of them. That's their best glove.

Otherwise, I'm going with some other brand.

Damn dude, 1.5 years of use with that much riding / abuse on the palm is pretty damn good IMO. I'd say you got your monies worth.

Alpinestars just sent me a pair of the GP Tech's, they are fucking pimp!

Chris, I dunno if I'd agree that A*'s have gone down in quality & up in price. I still think their build is good... at least on their gloves.

Yeah, that's why I wasn't too upset about it. I was more bummed cuz it meant that was the end of a pair of really good gloves.

I'm probably gonna give HELD a shot if i can, just for a bit of variety. I also wanna try the GP Techs out at some point. I threw Stupidhawk's GP Techs on & liked em. I also put Nick's Phantoms on & liked those, too even though they didn't fit.

When you guys say they wore out do you mean right down to like a hole in the leather? If they're wearing down that much from just riding what's gonna happen when you crash with them?

Yes, the leather in the the palm where my hand rests against the grip eventually wore through. But like Alex said, this is after more than a year & 1/2 of hard riding & a lot of it... and the two pairs combined saved my hands in 5 different crashes, so you could say I got my money's worth.

The hole in mine was from running wide in turn 6 and giving the grounds keeping a close inspection. It wore through the thin leather right above the padded area in the palm.

Can't say anything bad about AStars gloves. I have SP-1 for street/track riding, crash tested at about 65 mph. Held up great, not a scratch on me. I'm, still using them. There is 1 seam that needs restitching on back palm/wrist area that was grinded while I was sliding. Otherwise its got some very light scratches here and there. For summer street riding I have perforated leather A* Octane S gloves. Used for about 9 k miles. Still as good as new. Before that I had Shift streetfighter (?) gloves, which were POS compared to A*. Had to throw them out after 1 season of riding with multiple wear holes on palm, fingers.

how did you like those? those seem like the cuff is a bit higher compared to a reg short cuff glove. seems like it would be more convienient then a full gauntlet but offer a bit more wrist protection then a conventional short glove.
