    alright... what the hell...

    hopefully....

The timing on ZX10 got messed up. What to do?

Don't know what the hell I missed but after 2000 miles from last valve adjustment, the timing got messed up. The old mark I made on the chain and cam sprocket was no longer aligned. When I tried to align the old mark, the crankshaft marking points to 2,3 and not 1,4 as I remembered it. How do I reset the timing? How do I tell which revolution of crankshaft marking is the compression stroke and not the exhaust stroke? What I'd like to do is reset the timing, if I could, then take compression test to see how bad things are.

    Kham

Got to have shop manual for that level of stuff

If your timing chain slipped then chain tensioner must be not right.

There maybe alignment information on a 10 web site.

Pray it did not eat some valves.

Do not turn the motor over again.

Also somewhere there is a crank TDC mark Number 1 cylinder is almost always left most sitting on the bike. Usually viewed through a plug. There are also timing marks on the cam chain sprockets.

If the cam is out then I believe it is you putting the cam in that defines it is on a power stoke. I am only unsure about the ignition if its 2 coils then it won't matter if 4 coils then I am not sure

    good luck

To find TDC and make sure you are on the compression stroke take out all the plugs and turn the motor over by hand - Do Not Use The Starter - use your finger to plug the hole for the number one cylinder. As your turning it over, you'll feel and hear air blowing past your finger - that's the compression stroke. Good luck...

If you marked the chain and spockets, that's fine too put it back together, but once you crank the engine, you shouldn't expect the marks to line up again. In order for that to work, the number of links in the chain would have to be divisble by the number of teeth on the sprocket. To check the timing you should be looking for the factory stamped timing notches, not your previous marks.

can't bring it back to dealer. no more warranty.

well? thought you might want to know i worked on it all day. reset timing according to manual by counting teeth and all that. didn't have compression gauge to test so put it all back together and sounds fine when not riding. still have similiar symptum when under load. it hesitate under acceleration but ridable.

there is only one way to install the tensioner. i don't know what the fuck happened.

i think gonna be looking for a new engine.

You could have an "actual" mechanic look at it before you make a paperweight out of it. You'd need a really big desk! .

So, let me get this straight. Your bike might have serious engine issues, or it might have some other problem, you don't know because you didn't buy a $20 compression gauge to check your engine with. Instead, your buddy suggested to you that you put off diagnosing your bike issues for another 4 months while continuing to ride it as hard as possible, which you thought was an excellent solution to your problem. Am I getting this all about right?

It's kinda sad what passes for clever in your circle of friends, Kham.

They sell them in stores now, you know.
oh they do sell them in store? : actually i do have one for car. it didn't have the correct adapter for bike or i might have lost it.

i'm not jumping to any conclusion jus tyet other than the valves could be messed up.

i was told the leak down test should pin point the problem where compression test just say there is no compression in this cylinder.

since bike is back together i'm gonna ride the piss out of it like i said because i know the timing is corrected and can't do any more damaged. so i thought.

Maybe some brands rely on that tactic for sportbike sales but the Yamaha R-bikes are the hardest to get and sell out first/fastest.... and they haven't set the world on fire in the racing department either

Ok I'll bite, If they are so great, why do you have to get rid of them when they are a year old? I know people that keep Dodge trucks longer

If compression is low in 1 o2 cylinders... not zero.

If its just down on power a little and isn'y making a lot of noise. Or no more then a little tick.

Take it for a test ride near your home. If you can't find any further problems then I would think it is alright to ride....

If there is a problem it would be with the valves. If one was hitting a piston you'ld hear it. If one was wide open then there would be zero compression in that cylinder.

    Possible further damage from use....
Valve seat and guides valve is already toast if bent.

Catastrofic failure would be valve sticking hitting a piston
wrap wrap wrap and 0 compression.

Valve breaking off then it would take out the head and cylinder

Rich, I test rided and it's no good. It did not want to accelerate. Seems worse than I thought. Can't tell by the sound because it's not that loud at all but something is ringing from the tail pipe.

well? it's gonna come apart again for a compression test. I just gotta get to the store because they sell the gauge there. you know?

Geez isn't it high time you take it to a Kawi dealer or expert mechanic and let them fix it right?

It sounds too serious to be messing around with it yourself.. you do at least have the service manual right?
