am I crazy for considering 2 new bikes?

Talk me down. I'm on the verge of trying to sell my 3 bikes and my wife's bike and replacing them with a leftover 1190 Adventure and either a Triumph Speed Twin or T120. This would involve taking a loan out on the 1190, which I've never done before for a motorcycle. Also my wife and I just became parents, so we probably won't be doing very much riding this year, and almost none together. Am I crazy? Should I wait until next season and reevaluate? Is it stupid to borrow for a bike, especially considering that I no longer use them as primary transportation? I've never had a brand new bike before and probably never will unless I take out a loan. Pros/cons of buying new?

both new bikes for you?...or 1 for you 1 for her?...i would say buy 1 but used and see how much you ride once the kid comes but don't break the bank on the bike in case you need the money and def don't get into a loan...if you sell all 4 bikes the money will go somewhere else that's why i say at least buy 1

The bonneville would be for her primarily, but I'm sure I'd ride it. If we only get one new bike it will be an upgrade for her and I'll keep my Tiger.

Buying a brand new bike is fun, I've done it 1/2 dozen times. I love to have something new, pristine, unmolested. But I always choke on the cost.
I usually find that if I wait, either the desire to buy fades or intensifies -if it's the latter I pull the trigger. I wanted a new Diavel badly...but I've been waiting it out and now I think I'd be perfectly happy with a used one instead and save the difference. Maybe if I keep waiting I won't buy one at all which is probably my best move (although zero fun).

The Street Twin is the budget option. The new T120 is the higher end version.

She's riding an 83 kz550. Upgrading to something more modern and reliable is our first priority, now that we know how much she loves to ride. We like the Ducati scrambler too, but we both like the new water cooled bonnies more.

Looking at leftover 14 and 15 1190s and the price seems to be about the same as a used one with 10k miles and most of its warrantee used up. And based on the way the air cooled Bonnevilles have held their value over the last decade plus I'm not anticipating finding any crazy used deals in the next year. So the reason for looking at new bikes is at least partly to get the warrantee.

Yours looks a lot nicer without all that shit the other one had bolted on. I tried to explain to my wife how easy it is to remove the ugly stuff...

thanks here is one without the bags right after i got it...yea the ugly stuff is easy to change...the previous owner had the arrow exhaust put on and the rear grab bar...i put on (not in below photo)

-extended m6x80 seat bolts, m6 nuts, m6 lock washers, m6 washers
-vario pegs with the shortest arms
-SW-MOTECH Bags Connection Blaze Sport Saddlebag System
    -tank grips (triumph oem)
    -cheap ebay barend mirrors
    -caterpillar o-ring cruise control

...i still want to put on some better rear springs, new signals and tail light...maybe a nice set of wide beach bars...and i may pull the grab bar

Remember to budget for MA sales tax and excise tax. That would really add up on a couple of new or new-ish bikes.

Re: am I crazy for considering 2 new bikes?

Which 1190 are you after, and what kind of price are you seeing?
There are rumors about of folks scoring 1190 ADV-Rs for $13-something-k. My guy says $15.5k, not a penny less. I believe $14.5k would be easy to find.
Lots of reports of guys getting into the 1190-S for $13-something as well.

Not that I have been looking or anything.

Re: am I crazy for considering 2 new bikes?

Locally I've seen '14 and '15 1190's for ~$13225 and R's for $15225. Probably wouldn't go with the R unless I found one below $14k. Looking nationally I've seen R's in the $13-14k range and 1190's for around $12k. Some of those might have been demos, which is fine with me.

I am seriously lusting after these KTMs... But I have a great bike already and my wife has a rolling pile of garbage, so hers will come first.

Re: am I crazy for considering 2 new bikes?

    Congrats on being a dad!

No kidding, I saw a grandpa on a Harley with a baby seat on his bike last summer. Little girl no more than 1-2 years cruising in the back. Maybe it's just me but I would pretty much die of a heart attack instantly if that was my daughter

Anyway, that's totally unrelated. Having a baby is damned expensive though and I wouldn't personally risk stretching my finances to the limit, so it's really a judgement call I guess, just make sure you have something to fall back on just in case. My daughter had serious health complications around 4months - 4 years. which I won't get into but it was hard enough just making bills during that time, and it was completely unexpected.

Not trying to discourage you but definitely think about having a bit of breathing room or the stress might kill you before the bike does
