They had them there today when I stopped by... I didn't even get on because they let you go in a big circle really slow in the parking lot. yay.

The big circle was just to get you familiar with the machine. You then went out on Manchester St headed south following a lead rider from Bombardier. So you did get to take it through the gears in an on road situation.

My friend Kenny works in service so hopefully I'll be able to get an honest rip ride around the area...

I've ridden a few of them and even had my rep's demo for a weekend last year...

Once the novelty wares off, they're not nearly as much fun as a motorcycle. It was cool to rip on one for a few days, but it's nothing I would want to own. It handles like a snow mobile, but the computer controlled "nanny" won't allow it to slide. Not even a little bit.

It's really that intrusive? I've read and heard plenty of reports but always took with a grain of salt. Man oh man that sucks if that truly is the case.

Yea... The traction control doesn't let you get away with anything...

Come off the corner, nail the throttle, get ready for the rear to break loose into a really cool power slide and... Rev-limiter! The "nanny" doesn't allow it to get even a little bit out of shape.

It doesn't do rolling, dump the clutch, burnouts either.

It's all in the ECU... No go. It's a software deal, not just a sensor that you can unplug.

That, and you don't MacGyver shit on someone elses $18,000 scoot.

So some company will figure out how to reverse engineer or reflash the ECU, and sell them for a grand a pop to the wealthy fools who buy these things and want to be able to drift sideways into their garage.

Or you defeat the sensors instead. No wheel speed sensor means no slip detected! : )

It's not a wheel speed sensor...

computer compares speedo reading to engine rpm and kicks in as soon as rpm spikes.

Re: Can-Am Spider demos at Freedom Cycle in Concord, NH

Bugger, that'll take a bit more work to defeat. Something that compares RPM to wheel speed, deduces what gear your in, and feeds fake speedo output? First part already exists... should be much effort to extend it to generate fake speedo output.

Gotta be a way around that setup. : )

Far as I'm concerned it a waste of time... why have more than 2 wheels? As far as I can see, this only appeals to snowmobilers who aren't coordinated enough to ride bikes. If I'm going to have more than 2 wheels, it'd better be able to go offroad.

Wanna make a proto type? We can write off the purchase as a business expense and we can use my lab for all the production stuff...

Re: Can-Am Spider demos at Freedom Cycle in Concord, NH

demo'd one 2 yrs ago ..... got to go off alone for like 20 miles. tried like crazy to spool it up and spin slide and roll that thing into a ditch. they did thier homework regarding stupid proofing these things.

+1000 Novelty !!!!! I sure was glad to get off it and get back on my cbr 1k and tool the same roads at trips and smiling from ear to ear.

    great concept just toooooooo boring

did see a couple riding thru the German countryside ... that seemed like an appropriate use for them

Re: Can-Am Spider demos at Freedom Cycle in Concord, NH

I'm sure there are plenty of eggheads that can reflash the ECU. There's gotta be someone attempting it now even. It's almost scary what you can do when you know how to tinker with the ECU.

As for the built in nanny, I'd never guess they even had one after seeing a dumbass from a local car dealership, that has two parked out front...beat the piss out of one. I'm sure this isn't the first time he's done it either. 18k for something that didn't have the engine broken in right, and was probably hammered on right after being fired up with a cold engine. Wow. Wonder how long before it needs new rings.

Anyhow, I saw the afore mentioned dumbass shift into second and make a lot of noise with the rear tire squealing.

I then saw said dumbass come out of a parking lot sideways.

So, I'd never guess it had a nanny built in.

As for the comparison of these things to sleds... can ya really even do that? I've been riding sleds since I can't remember. Spiders have little to no appeal for me, but if it floats whomevers boat, more power to 'em. Or to the people who can't ride a bike (disabled, etc)

Now those T-Rex things look pretty cool.

Why don't you post a thread and say you'll post it later. Then, you can delete the thread.

well all the nanny stuff is what's keeping me from getting one (as a backup, and wife "bike"). So if there is a way to make it's riding more "fun" I'd love to hear about it. I actually demo'd them a few times, and with checkbook in hand asked about bypassing some of the systems and was told that it couldn't be done.

A quick search of a spyder forum shows disabling the traction control is super easy, on the manual transmission model. You just remove the sensors from their holders and zip tie them up into the frame. Only downside is the speedo doesn't work. it doesnt throw any codes either.
