When are you going to get your bike out? (SALT)

When are you going to get your bike out? (SALT)

With the nice weather forecast this weekend I'm seriously thinking about getting my ZZR600 turned around in my basement pointing it toward and out the door onto the recently salty streets. We had some pretty good rain that washed at least some of it away. Some of you don't worry about salt eating your bike. Some are very cautious and some are in between. I'm an in between.

With all the rain we've had its all gone anyways. Only thing left to worry about is the sand on the roads.

My bikes been out for a month now. Why worry about salt? If it eats your engine case, it's just an excuse to buy a new bike.

I picked up my 1198 from the shop last night at 7pm. I learned 2 things.

    1) Jesus Christ this bike has way too much power

    2) Pirelli Supercorsas do not like cold weather

    3) Jesus Christ this bike has a lot of power

Re: When are you going to get your bike out? (SALT)

Salt spray will fuck the wiring harness on the bike.
That said, I'm riding. Enough rain to wash away enough salt that I'm feeling good to go.
Unfortunately the AM temps are still a bit low for my threshold. 34-F leaving the house this morning.
Somehow I've put 12k miles on the truckzilla in 6 months.

Just picked up a new R1. New bike syndrome says RIDE IT! Damn the temps or road conditions. I laughed at your post as I pretty much said the same thing. I do have an ol' Ducati 996S that I thought was fast with its massaged engine and 124bhp to the rear wheel. It is now a garage queen.

For winter riding and just for plain old neighborhood hooligan riding I say you all go out and get a GROM. Hose it down a few times over the winter on the off warm day. I am way too old and way too big for the thing but DANG is it fun riding it around stretching the throttle cable wide open. Also if you want to learn to stunt this is the bike to practice on. BEWARE keep it stock! If you get caught up in tweaking the thing it gets expensive really fast and its all $'s with diminishing returns.

Was out in March after a bunch of rain. The roads here are white and crusty now, but a couple sport bikes just went by. Wish we could get a little rain!

I rode into work today. Cold fingers and watch out for the sand. Fine otherwise. Picked this up cheap, for commuting, but I think the R1 is better on my back.

I've been out for a while. I echo what everyone before me has said... although I don't mind the cold on my rolling couch.

Holy cold Batman. Rode in at 28* this morning, my neck started to burn 2 minutes in, my hands were numb at 5 minutes even with hand guards.

The joy of riding a naked bike in April I guess.

Mine's been out all winter. But then, that's a big part of why it looks like it does, which is not something every owner is going to be OK with.

The Norwegians say that there's no such thing as bad weather, just inadequate clothing.

Heated gloves and a good scarf or neck gaiter can solve those problems. With those items, and layering of other clothes, I can ride in reasonable comfort for an hour at 20F (-7C). That extends my riding season by at least a couple of months; I usually get it out at the beginning of April and ride until it snows and sticks -- generally between T-giving and Xmas.

I'm no Randy O., and am not looking to be, but I do want to ride whenever the roads are not icy.

I finally got some heated gloves last year....they do make riding on cold mornings more tolerable! I had heated grips on the Sprint and Multistrada, but decided to give some gloves a shot....I like them better than the heated grips.

I don't have any problem with visibility of sand on paved roads, but sometimes it's damn had to spot on gravel roads

Tomorrow morning is the YB breakfast at Willowbrook, 16 Hastings St Mendon. AKA Route 16. People get there around 8 and looks at bikes, buffet breakfast at 8:30. Neither membership nor BMW required.

From there lots of people ride off in every direction.

got the bike out Saturday. Glad I did! She's runnin' fine. Rain tonight to help with any salt. Salt eats Aluminum by accelerating oxidation.

Salt, sand and actual gound temp are the 3 things I worry about at this time of the season.

4 of us got out yesterday... first ride of the year for me. We hit some back roads, but rode mostly clean, salt/sand-free main roads.
Couldn't have asked for a better day... seemed like there were as many bikes as cagers!
