    arai helmet help

My father recently gave me one of his helmets, an arai quantum 2. Obviously a nice gesture, especially since it fits me perfectly, but I'm having an issue. I was practicing taking the shields in and out, and it appears that somethings happened under the side pods. one side of the shield is out, but the "LRS" lever is still under the pod and when i touch it seems like it isnt attached to anything. On the other side, the shield is still in the pod, but when I bring it up all the way, the lever does not pop out, giving me no way to get the shield out. Ideas?

stick a small screwdriver in there to pull the lever out.

If that doesn't work then grab the screwdriver/pen or whever and push the red tab back (pushing motion towards the back of the helmet). That will release the sidepod with will help you free the shield if needed. Just be very careful of the plastic tab on the top part of the side pod they tend to snap very easily.

Or easy way out would be to stop by my job and i'll fix it for ya.

agreed. The first time I swapped my shield on my Quantum II was over a year ago when I first bought the helmet and put the dark smoke shield on it. Had enough trouble that I didn't want to change my shield again... recently, however, I've been caught riding a lot at night. When I know I'll be out after dark, I'll put the clear shield back on. I've gotten a bit better with the swap, but it's still not a very quick and easy task like the HJC's.

If a screwdriver doesn't work, use a knife, like a buck knife. I keep mine on me at all times anyway, and has definitely come in handy when swapping my shields. Good luck!

When I got the lever out, pulling it didn't make the shield release.

ok, I managed to get the side of the shield that wasn't in back in. When that side (the right side) of the shield comes up, the lever pops out, but doesn't do anything when pulled. On the other side the lever doesn't come out at all when the shield is all the way up.

    Re: arai helmet help

I have an astral x and had the shield on and off many times before the thing (side pod) decided to snap off. Tried to send it back to Arai for a warranty issue but got the worst customer service experience of my life. Be very careful due to the screws holding things together are plastic of course. Not the best design I believe. From my personal experience, Arai does everything customer wise, by email. IF you need to get new parts, don't bother making an inquiry. It took about 2 weeks to get a reply. Call 610-837-4210 for direct parts. I don't believe from my experience, with their poor customer service, I will ever own another Arai but the damn thing is soooo comfortable on my egg head. The manual, if you have it, explains everything pretty well. Just don't believe their warrany claim. It wasn't the price of parts or shippinp. It was their piss poor cooperation in trying to fix what I still believe to be a legitimate problem. Hope those with Arai's don't get stuck on a long trip needing parts. You are Fucked! My 2 cents from my experience. I feel better now

There isn't much room in a sport bike trunk but there is enough room for a pair of safety glasses. Clear safety glasses cost under $10 at your local hardware store and work great for nights when you're caught out after dark. Just flip up the tinted shield, slip on the safety glasses and you can see.

Yea, I didn't add that to my post, but I always keep clear safety glasses in my trunk. It's just that recently, past couple months, when the sun went down, it got a bit chilly, and I knew I'd be doing a lot of highway riding. When I'm on the highway, I keep my shield down, even if it's my dark smoke and when I'm wearing the glasses (not the most comfortable thing, and these were mostly times I was coming out of Boston, or back from Lowell). On back roads, I'm perfectly cool with the glasses. My shield makes an awful whistling sound when it's up and I'm riding because of the holes in it that allow it to attach to the helmet.

Almost ALL helmets on the market use plastic screws to hold the shield mechanism in place.

Most dealers will keep plenty (or should) of spare parts in-stock for arai helmets. At Riverside we keep more Arai spare parts than any other brand we carry, heck we keep a bunch of spare side pods as loaners in case we don't have a side pod instock if a customer needs it.

I won't mention blank Bay but they had neither a part nor a phone number for parts. But, if you keep more arai parts in stock than any other, I suppose arai has the most problems. Correct?

We keep alot of Arai parts instock because its our #1 selling helmets. I'm not going to lie either if you're not familiar with arai's construction things tend to break if not handled correctly. I always try to explain functions/features to he best of my ability regarding helmets but sometimes the info can be overwhelming for some people and when they try to "fix" things sometimes bad things happen.

I will agree, you can't be rough with this stuff. One can only bend plastic so far. I had 1 bad very long drawn out experience. I have heard quite the opposite from others. I'll blame it on my Polish ancestry. The End!

    Re: arai helmet help

Moto market has most fixit parts for Arai's, the shield mech. under the pod on my Profile broke, I went down to MOTO Market, The nice man said the part is $6 with tax, he changed it for me and showed me how he did it because the package comes with 2, one for each side..So I got one for when I break the other side..
