    Silly clip on question...

Ok, so after breaking an OEM clipon I picked up a used set of vortex clip ons. My stock ones go over the triple tree on my first gen R6. So, I mounted the aftermarket ones on top of the triple. Nobody told me otherwise but when making a comment to another R6 owner(someone that races quite a bit) about the aftermarkets taking some getting used to because they were higher up than stock, I was made fun of for mounting them on top of the triple. Huh? Should I have put them under? Seems to me like they would be wicked low. I may as well lay down on my tank. And, there would be a whole lotta fork tube sticking up through the triple tree if I did that....

I'm confused. I assumed that you would mount the aftermarkets in the same position as the OEM's. Maybe I'm wrong?

They go under the top triple. That's why they have a rise built in to them. The rise makes them end up just a little bit lower than the stock clip-ons.

    Re: Silly clip on question...

So even if my stocks were over the triple, the aftermarket have to go under? I'm not sure that my brake lines, controls, etc. will fit if they are mounted under....
Do I need to move the triple? There will be a whole lotta fork sticking out if I mount them under.

Too bad I'm nowhere near the bike right now and can't look at it all...

I wonder why no one suggested this before when I was complaining all weekend at the track about how high my bars were....

    Re: Silly clip on question...

your brakes lines and cables will have less distance they need to travel when the bars are lower. so no worries there.

don't worry about the forks sticking up so much above the triple. you can lower the forks in the triples but it will negatively affect how the bike turns. I'd just leave them where they are.

    Re: Silly clip on question...

I've also heard that my street plastics may not fit if I mount the bars under the triple...
So if I want to street my bike again I am forced to have stock clip ons? Argh.

well I suppose that would depend on bar placement. if there's no way you can get the clearance on the stock plastics then try to run the cables in such a way that you can just unbolt the clip ons and move them up top to ride on the street. I'd imagine the bike would be more comfortable on a street ride with them up there anyway.

or is it possible to mount them on top but flip them over so the rise becomes a lowering? depends on how they angle I think if this is even possible.

Put 'em where ever you want. Personally I'd have the same concern as you with having to look at 70mm of fork tube sticking out of the top triple. Whatever the case, you don't want to raise the front so the fork tubes are even with the top triple.

I've had a set of woodcraft clip ons in a box in my garage all season. Reason I have not installed them yet? Planning. For a bike that sees street and track duty, its not a plug and play thing. I haven't had the 6 or so hours to devote to measuring clearances, cable routing, hose routing, master cylinder placement etc and installation. I want to install them once and get it right first time.

Oh, and it is possible to mount the left one on the right and vice versa. You didn't do that, did you?

They are better on the track if you mount them under. The only real problem with doing that, as you said, they will interfere with stock plastics. If you plan on doing any street, keep them on top.

    Re: Silly clip on question...

It was the same way on my R6... they're definitely designed to be mounted under. I'm not sure why people have a problem with seeing a bit of fork tube sticking out, who cares? The lower bars will certainly feel a lot better on the track, but as has been said it may be a bit awkward on the street. That's a choice you'll have to make for yourself.

    Very true...

So now I am sorta regretting buying a used pair of vortex, since I have to take the entire top triple off to mount them under...

I think if I had gone with the woodcrafts I wouldn't have had to do that. Jeebus. Maybe i should just pick up a stock replacement used and be done with it. I dunno. Sounds dumb but I will be losing sleep over this clip on debacle. i thought it would be a piece of cake to swap them out for the stocks, oi.

The problem with stock clipons is that a simple fall =A broken clip on= End of trackday or at least many Missed sessions. Sell the Vortex and buy woodcraft. Put them whereever you feel best.
