no, I said its hard to go 1500 miles in 24 hours east of mississippi, meaning where speed limits are not over 70. 1500 miles is more minutes off pace getting gas. Also finding route that has no construction holdups, not going thru metropolitan areas during commuter hours, no long hilly sections of 2 lane with trucks trying to pass trucks @ 64½ mph when your trying to maintain a 73 mph pace, compared to Montana where cruisin speed is 85+, although you pay for the higher rolling speed with more fuel stops or the topic of this thread, larger fuel capacity
One of my projects before I add an auxiliary tank is to expand the capacity of my stock tank. I already have a damaged donor tank for my Vee. However LD mods have become secondary to my winter riding goals

Sheppo, I just noticed that bike is in my parking lot too! I ride a Black Yamaha WR250X and park over on the far side of the lot. I guess that is your BMW I have ogled over a couple of times. Maybe we could head out for a lunch time ride if you have time one of these days. You should post a pic of his dash up, it looks like he is only missing a 50" flatscreen up there!
Nomad Tanks makes some nice auxiliary fuel tanks
i thought this custom aux tank was a cool idea... they matched the silencer and used it for fuel on the left side.

Yea I park near that yellow bike. I work for a certain service provider located in that corner of the parking lot, started with the company last September as well. I have my cage today because I need to pick up an old VFR motor after work. Otherwise my plan is to either ride moto or bicycle to work this summer.
ST1300? That seems to be the most popular IB bike, at least for finishers.
I would say FJR1300 over ST1300 by a 2:1 margin, at least in last Rally

st's can handle up to 4" of Snow!!!!!!!! nice bike but not as comfortable the gs1200. I was expecting the opposite. in 1400 miles of riding I averaged 38MPG on the st1300. I also got better fuel mileage on the gs on the 1000mile trip that had more mountain terrain.

A lot of guys on the FJR forums run IB rallies and other LD events. Mine can go a pretty long distance ('bout 300 miles) on a tank of fuel if you don't accelerate hard all the time.
I don't know much about the use of ST's.
BMW's seemed to be a lot less common due to final drive problems but there are still a lot. I know one competitor who left a final drive at home in a Fedex ox in case his wife needed to send it out, and the Treasurer of Yankee Beemers had his fail last year and competed the four corners ride on an old Kawasaki. You aren't going to find really short competitors on a GS or very tall ones on an ST1300, I don't think.
2013 Four Corners Finishers. Ignoring trikes (and some don't list the bike) there were four GoldWings, a Victory Vision, a BMW K1200LT and a V-Strom DL650 in an abnormally small group.
In '12 there were 32 BMW's, 29 Harleys, 5 Hondas, 2 Victory Visions, 2 V-Stroms, and the rest of the 83 were single entries.

There's a lot of bikes that can do it. It just seems the heavier touring type bikes are chosen before the multi-sport types for whatever reason. I think comfort, highway manners, charging system all has to play into it. Not an LD rider myself, just out to have some fun, comfortably.
Yep. The 'wee' strom is not really my first choice for multi-state, interslab mile munching. ~6k RPM @ 80 MPH.
But the range...
Wonder how an EX250 would do...
SO I just talked to the guy that owns that bike. He leaves tomorrow for Pittsburg and from there the rally starts and they ride to Sacramento and back. He is going to email me a link so I can follow along, I'll post it up. That gas tank is actually a "quick dump" right into his existing tank which is under the tank on an ST1300. It hold 3.8 gallons and takes just under a minute to empty into his tank.

Oddly, my '12 model feels really "comfortable" at that engine speed. In fact, up to 90 MPH, the bike is really amazingly calm and smooth running.
I took our '99 EX250 out for a slab ride last year, and it's engine, too felt amazingly comfortable at 80-85 MPH - like it could run there all day. I later spooned on some lower profile Pirelli's, and they took some of its legs away. It could probably stand to be geared up a bit now.
Seat-wise - Due to its shape, the rock hard EX250 seat is much more comfortable for long distances than the DL seat. Both would negate any prerequisite for an auxiliary fuel tank.
the 650 will keep up all day and then some, its not about the engine. Ride a 1000 cc all day at 4000 rpm vs a 650 at 7000 rpm and tell me which one fatigues the operator more
