Yeah, the letters are different but numbers match. Didn't know how close or different the actual parts may be if he is in a bind.

The 5FL is the key to R7 specific parts. I’m pretty sure the -00-00 at the end of each part # can be left off, but even that if second guess

He could get lucky. I was able to source some hard to get Yamaha parts from local places. I've certainly seen some old parts come through my work. Like car parts for 70s and 80s era cars.

Try calling Iconic? They've had their fare share of R7s and they seem to collect parts for stuff too..

I’ve been in contact with iconic, they have been very helpful and likely I’ll be getting a big box of parts from them soon

You could also reach out to Pete Boccarossa @ Superbike Universe. He sells exotic bikes like that.

He would probably know who to contact for parts.

    A nice ebay score.

Does anyone have any tips on removing paint, that was painted over clear coat? And in this process, trying to maintain the original clear coating under the paint? Someone at some point painted several parts black and I’d like to put them back to their original condition. The rear set heal plates, the chain adjuster blocks, fuel fill caps, and small bits on handle bar controls.

No personal experience with this exact situation, but I'd think starting with "aggressive" polishing (maybe wool pad) would be the way to go, maybe some 3000 wet sanding, or maybe one of the MILD polishing 3M Roloc bristle discs : https://www.3m.com/3M/en_LB/p/d/b40064937/

Pretty delicate situation, good luck, i'm sure you'll end up with them looking brandy new in your next update....

It’s been ridden, but definitely not a lot. I haven’t been able to power up the dash yet to confirm, but was told it read somewhere between 1600-2000 KM’s. The bike shows very little use on the most common wear areas, so I feel confident with the 2000Km number.

I'm watching this thread with SO MUCH anticipation! Subscribed, and wishing you the best possible outcome even if it does take several years to complete to as close to your ideal as possible.

Thank you! The goal is to be able to ride it this year, but it will take a few years to make it perfect.
I’ve actually been having good luck sourcing parts (cosmetic mostly, some mechanical) so far, but not the critical parts I really need to make it run. I’m hoping within a couple weeks to have a complete looking bike.

Re: Bad decisions were made today..

Just paid the invoice from iconic motorbikes for some parts. The unfortunate part, no mechanical parts, it’s strictly cosmetic. I needed an original R7 tail section, and now have one on the way… as well as a full set of R7 cowlings and a spare fuel tank. I had to buy everything to get the tail section. Now it’s a waiting game for the box to arrive.

I'm curious but not sure that I want to know what this is costing you. I am jealous. Way back what did the first R7 go for?

The original MSRP for a new R7 in 1999 was $32k. I bought mine for $21,500 in 2000. While I am keeping track, I don’t want to know the cost now either.. lol I’ll say at worst case, this current bike will cost me less than the new one I purchased in 2000.

Goof off, simple green, etc, didn’t touch the paint. I picked up this spray on paint/epoxy remover, and it worked amazing. It not only removed the paint, it didn’t damage the perfect clear coat/powder coat on the original parts.

I was surprised the all the parts I cleaned today, appeared to be in perfect condition.

    Bad decisions were made today..-img_6545-jpg

Also removed the rear wheel so I could remove the paint from the chain adjusters… there aren’t even any sand chips in the swingarm from the rear wheel. Just confirms the low miles on this thing.

Re: Bad decisions were made today..

Made some progress on the OW-02 project this weekend.
Took the exhaust system off and reinstalled it correctly, and using the OE mounting brackets. It was all installed wrong, using the. wrong brackets and hardware. Now all the pipes clear the engine and suspension, and the silencer lines up with the body lines of the tail section better.

    Bad decisions were made today..-img_6560-jpg

Next, I wanted to put the original levers back on the rear sets. I took both rear sets apart, cleaned everything, greased the pivot points, installed the rear brake light switch, and was able to find the missing shift rod ends. Both rear sets are now functional in the same way they came from the factory.

    Bad decisions were made today..-img_6563-jpg

    Bad decisions were made today..-img_6562-jpg

The headlight stay was also mounted incorrectly, and with the incorrect hardware. I removed all the washers, nuts and bolts, and installed the correct tab that had the 2 bolts welded to it. Installed the headlight assembly once the front stay was lined up properly.

    Bad decisions were made today..-img_6566-jpg

Finally I removed all the bolts and hardware that someone painted black, stripped the paint off them, cleaned everything and put it back together. I still need to remove the handle bar switches and try to remove the paint from those as well.

I’ve got a crate of parts coming this week from Iconic Motorbikes, and I’ve been in contact with a guy from the UK that has a lot of YEC R7 parts.
As of now the key pieces I need are the air box, the coolant hose for the top of the engine, complete front brake set up (master, lines, calipers) and a seat.

I’ll have quite a selection of R7 parts to sell off as well once my bike is complete.

This is soooo satisfying to watch. Glad you got this so it all gets done proper as this bike deserves!
