Basics of Motorcycle Riding - Informative Speech

I have to write a 5-10 min informative speech on the basics of motorcycle riding for my speech communications class. (MODS if I posted this in the wrong place I sowwy)

So far I have 7 main points to talk about in my speech:
    • ATGATT
    • Dont ride beyond your skill set
    • Practice, Practice, Practice
    • Get a mentor that doesnt mind you asking a million questions and showing you a few things
    • MSF course --> Advanced Rider Course
    • It's exhilarating & challenging at the same time... dont give up!

What am I missing?? Any suggestions are welcome!!

5-10 minutes? You could probably make those 7 points last 5-10 hours.

Since the MSF BRC teaches people straight from the beginning I'd think that would be a reasonable starting point. You could go on to talk about how it educates new riders on the physical controls as well as bike prep (pre-ride check lists), rider prep (gear, mental state, etc) and street strategies.

Re: Basics of Motorcycle Riding - Informative Speech

I'd say those are all really good motorcycle online advice, but if you've been given the specific topic of "the basics of motorcycle riding" you might want to spend some of the time talking about how to actually ride a motorcycle. Both mechanically - how to operate the controls and keep your balance, and mentally - how to keep your head together so you don't fixate on the first guardrail you see and crash into it.

Just a thought... I don't know how exactly the assignment was worded...

I didnt even think about adding in how to operate b/c I know it can become lengthly. I think so far Ill use MSF, how to operate mechanically v mentally, and ATGATT (only will use as fluff incase I am below time constraints)

shorts and flip flops are perfectly acceptable riding attire in the summer as long as a helmet is somewhere on the bike....

Re: Basics of Motorcycle Riding - Informative Speech

Teacher updated us stating that the speech can only have 3 main points. Makes it a little easier!!

MSF, Pre ride & Post ride inspections, & mechanically v mentally operating your toy ??

    I keep changing my mind...

Because the course is "Informative" think about what 3 very specific things you want the audience to leave with and *remember*. Use the balance of the time supporting the 3 things with examples to leave a lasting impression with the audience. The 3 things should be directly related to the theme or title of the presentation/speech.

The points seem fine. Practice the speech many times, with a timer.

    Recruit friends for critique.

    Make eye contact.

Preparation and practice really show in these assignments.

While I'm not Pr. Caplan, I am an actual college professor and I can assure you that presentations don't come naturally to 99% of people, but for those who practice and become skilled, it is a very useful skill.

    Good luck,

Maybe mention the buddy system. Its safer and more fun to ride with a friend unless you are both goons. In that case its not really safer but a lot more fun

Got it ride with goons preferably the ones that wear sandals & shorts while their helmets are safely tacked to their back seats.

How about the mental part of getting back on your bike after falling off, or please listen to the Dr.'s suggestion and wait untill the cast is off before trying to ride again.

Re: Basics of Motorcycle Riding - Informative Speech

crucial part to all this is this one very important fact...

motorcycle forums are NOT a good place for motorcycle information....

these places are for entertainment purposes only and specialize in politics/religion/argumentative practices/bullshit/funny videos/useless lame videos/etc...

Re: Basics of Motorcycle Riding - Informative Speech

I would actually cut it down to 3 main points and then talk about each one with your own experiences or stories that you have heard that back them up. I would fall asleep if you start talking about what each one is without examples.
