    Bell RS1 helmet fogging issue

I noticed last year when I bought my Bell RS1 that towards the end of the summer it fogs up much easier than the Scorpion I used previously. As fall crept in the issue kept getting worse. I bought a anti-fog treatment that I had found on webbikeworld, seems to help somewhat, still nowhere as good as the Scorpion. Anticipating commuting in the cold I applied a new coat of the anti-fog treatment few weeks back.

The following day I left for work one morning last week, it was about 30F @ 0600 when I left. I did not even make it out of my neighborhood and my helmet was completely fogged up, the remainder of my 9 mile commute was brutal. It fogged to the point it was dangerous, I had to keep lifting my visor to clear it and then deal my forehead being way too cold. I have not been able to locate the rubber breath insert that the helmet came with, but to be honest the Bell is fogging so fast I cannot see it making much of a difference.....

Any ever have the this issue and come up with a way to fix it? Debating if I should just buy another Scorpion Helmet for the winter months?

Maybe you breathe too heavy? Bell RS1 helmet fogging issue

I've never had this problem with mine. Try a different visor?

Bell makes a fine helmet, must just be an anomaly. I can fashion you a sick duct tape breath deflector if you like?

    Odd.
I breath like a heifer running a marathon and never have my RS-1 fog up. In fact it's one of the things i like best about it.
Maybe the shield got short changed on the coating.

My glasses fog in my RS1, but clear the instant I start moving again, so I just lift the visor at a stop. I might have the breath deflector somewhere (I remove them right away since they deflect onto my glasses)

Have you tried removing the chin curtain?

Do they make a breath box for that helmet? I have something similar in my HJC which seems to help. It also helps me keep the visor open or cracked in the cold without exposing too much of my face.

Like this Bell Star/Vortex/RS-1 Breath Box - RevZilla

I've read pinlock setups are good for this, but have yet to try myself due to a shipping mix-up that has yet to be corrected. Surprised no one else has mentioned those.

Have not tried removing the chin curtain. Maybe the transition shield don't have as much anti-fog coating applied? I'll try my wifes tinted shield, pretty I only have the transition shield.

I have the transitions shield. If I'm sitting at a stoplight in cold weather it will fog a little. I usually just crack it as I'm pulling up. Zero issues while moving. Have you used any cleaners on the inside lens?

Re: Bell RS1 helmet fogging issue

I had a ton of fogging with my RS-1 and transition shield last fall/winter in colder weather (bike's out of commission right now so can't commiserate about this one). I never found a solution although I didn't try any products, just had to open the shield at stops/low speed and it would clear up once moving.

Pin lock would work but I haven't seen a pin lock shield from Bell yet.

The issue is moving, the fogging does not clear even while moving.
I usually hit the inside of the shield with Sprayway window cleaner a few times a year. I did wash it with dish soap before applying the Anti-fog treatment about a month ago, maybe the dish soap wash too harsh?.......

Let me make a little better effort to look through my bike stuff and see if I can find mine, thanks.

Mine is not clearing up while moving, stays foggy unless I open the shield. It was definitely not this bad last year.

Do you close the vents? I left mine open, I found that my head didn't get cold and figured it would help with clearing up the fog.

Re: Bell RS1 helmet fogging issue

If it doesn't clear even with moving then there is something wrong with the venting. You should check if the holes are covered by mistake by the liner. Also, it sounds like the face shield needs a good cleaning then application of the antifog. For some reason the water is sticking to it...

Re: Bell RS1 helmet fogging issue

I have an RS-1, the transitions shield, and the double pane face shield kit.
I pulled the chin curtain and I ride with the breath box year round.
At first I just did it because winter.
But I feel much cooler in the summer setup like that, so I just leave it in.

With the breath box and the transitions shield, it generally stays clear above 50F.
Below 50F, it depends on the humidity. If it's really high humidity and I'm stuck in traffic, it fogs.
Low humidity, it's fine. Cracked and moving mine generally clears.
Much below 40F and it fogs a lot in standing traffic.
If it goes beyond fogging to lots of condensation, it's really hard to clear.

I usually switch out the transitions shield the fall time change.
I don't think I've ever had the double pane shield fog and I've ridden with it down to 15F.
Might have been one day where it was 30ishF and misty out, but if it's that cold and that
humid, I usually leave the bike home. I've ridden on poorly plowed streets, but I have
a pretty health fear of riding while it's snowing.

Re: Bell RS1 helmet fogging issue

Grabbed my wife's tinted shield last night, cleaned it with Stoner glass cleaner. Applied a coat of the anti-fog treatment I have and removed the chin curtain, happy to report absolutely no fog at all! Only had to stop briefly for one traffic, but still 100 times better than a few weeks ago. Never once cracked the shield open, granted it was 8F degrees warmer today then when I had the issues before.....

I'll have to try re-installing the chin curtain and see if that hurts the helmets ability to remove fog, then try cleaning the transition shield again and treating with the anti-fog again.

There's definitely more breath trapped in there with the chin curtain in.
I find it to be a big difference.

Re: Bell RS1 helmet fogging issue

Thanks for the tip! I remember when I bought the Bell RS1 I was concerned that they sold the breathe box setup for it, but this was the first real issue I had with fogging.
