Unhappy I bet the guy didn't even wave back...

Woman Fights for Life After Scooter Accident

    Cornish, New Hampshire - June 13, 2008

An Upper Valley woman is fighting for her life following a scooter accident.

Police say Marcia Woodbury, 62, of Plainfield, was riding her new scooter on Route 12A in Cornish late Thursday afternoon, when she took one hand off the handlebars to wave to an oncoming motorcyclist. She then crashed into a guardrail. Officials said Woodbury is a novice operator, and her scooter only had 36 miles on it.

Woodbury was wearing a helmet, but was unconscious at the scene.

She is listed in critical condition at the hospital.

I also read in the Eagle times that she did have gear on.

I would have waved and from now on I'll watch my mirrors after I pass.

I'm guessing the person waved at her first...I doubt a novice rider (scooter in fact) would know that waving was something that riders did.

Was it a GSXR scooter? She could have been out stunting.

Thats terrible, I feel kinda bad for her.

I usually don't wave to scooters. I figure they wouldn't know what to do if I did.

....uh...I believe the generally accepted response to a wave is a return wave...

motorcyclists didn't invent waving and it's not like a secret handshake or something...

Shame about the poor woman. I hope she has a full and speedy recovery.

NH woman dies of injuries from June scooter crash
    July 27, 2008
CORNISH, N.H.—A Plainfield, New Hampshire woman, has died of injuries she suffered in a scooter crash in Cornish last month.

Police say 62-year-old Marcia Woodbury had only 36 miles on her scooter when she lost control going around a sharp curve on Route 12A on June 12.

She was found unconscious and was hospitalized in critical condition. Cornish Police say Woodbury died on Sunday at Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center.

    Dayum!

    What a let down...

I am a little confused however:

...she took one hand off the handlebars to wave to an oncoming motorcyclist. She then crashed into a guardrail.
...she lost control going around a sharp curve...

Yeah, I know. That was the only post online I found.
The local paper didn't say "Sharp Curve". If fact there are no sharp curves on 12a up that way.

She did have gear on. Not sure what but more than a helmet.

I past a scooter going the other way last week. I didn't wave to her. She was in the breakdown lane getting past by an SUV. I was chanting "Don't wave, Don't wave..."

I've recently taken up a "wave to everyone" policy. I don't care what kind of two wheeled motorized contraption it is. The funny thing is that way more people than I would have expected wave back!

In fact, I was even thinking of starting an initiative to promote inter-class bike waving. www.wavetoeveryone.org is available! Everyone gets out on the open road on two wheels for the same reasons anyway.

I gotta be honest, Im amazed more scooter riders havent been killed. The way I see some of them driving around Boston, Im completely amazed it hasnt become an epidemic. I hope the states do something to try to stop the accidents before they start, but Im sure they wont.

    Not true.

There are a lot of people riding scooters, mopeds, and small-displacement motorcycles now to escape gas prices, and with many of them you can tell immediately that that's the ONLY reason they're on two wheels.

While I like the idea of more people riding no matter what their motives may be, I'm concerned by the apparent lack of training many of the commuters have, and by their frequent lack of gear. I expect we're going to be seeing a lot more accidents like this poor woman's.

i try to wave to everyone on 2 wheels with a motor..

the trouble with Scoots is in Maine, under 50cc no training no classes no license required. when i got a friend of mine one i insisted she take the class anyway.. though she still has not gotten a motorcycle license.

Same as MA, and you dont need to have it plated or insured. (Im not sure on registration.) Problem is, you see more than enough that are well over 50cc that arent plated or insured and the police do absolutely nothing about them. I saw one rolling down Storrow Drive with no plate, no registration, no gear cept a little half helmet. If it can be on storrow, it should be considered a motorcycle and follow the same rules.

Its legal under 50ccs I believe. But of course, people that dont register them as over 50ccs do it too

The rules are under 50cc must be registered as a moped $40.00 for two years. Over 50cc as a motorcycle, plated, inspected and insured. Helmets are required for all and a valid license, auto license is ok for under 50cc.
One issue is the cops and registry have NO idea what is going on. You can go to a different branch of the Mass RMV or even a different person with in the same branch and get different answers to your questions as to what you need or don't need for registrations. The influx of scooters due to the high cost of fuel caught everone off guard. Including the cops and registry.

All I can say is try and educate the new scooter rider. I recommended the MSF course and good riding gear for every scooter I sold.

So the little square red registration sticker are required for ALL scooters. But over 50ccs require a license plate on the back? (simplifying things, but its easy to tell.) And helmets are or arent required under 50ccs?
And what are the chances people will realize my KLX110 isnt under 50ccs like I tell everyone?

Helmets are required under 50cc and yes all you need is that little red sticker on a moped.

Well take off all the KLX110 stickers..

the other part of the under 50cc deal is, they are NOT supposed to go over 30MPH, but even a stock Yammy Zuma with me, 6' 230lb, went over 40mph

It’s tough to hear anyone loosing a life. RIP

As much as I like to think you can do whatever you want there should be limits. Especially with more novice scooter riders on the road. I feel there may be changes shortly to make sure everyone has the proper training. I see so many scared s!@#less faces and so stiff an upper body they looking for the next crash.

There is a guy at work that just picked up 2 Vespas all because they were on them once in Italy and now the gas prices. I told him things that he should consider i.e Jacket/gloves you know safety equipment. He has yet to pick anything up. This morning he commuted in with his daughter on the back who was wearing a helmet/tank top/shorts and flip flops. I did my part in trying to inform him. I think unfortunately he is going to learn the hard way down the road.
