Saw this lil dude (10 years old) ripping it up at Adams. I believe it was a 110 cc....at any rate, I know there are some mini-moto races/series brewing in the NH/VT areas, would be a perfect start for the little guy!

That is very cool but I'm not sure how abiding his interest is.

His grades would have to be just about perfect to be rockin that setup! But since I told him it was a possibility if he got good grades, he's really buckled down. I'm going to take him to Duncan Moto for a "test-sit" of his 100 and we'll go from there.

There is also a driving school and series in carts at F1 Boston (Braintree) that he's expressed interest in. The last thing I intend to do is spoil him. Compared to what I grew up with this is all heady stuff.

We have a older Honda 50 . I would go with something with no clutch . if they enjoy riding there will be plenty of time for a clutch . the Honda doesnt sit too long before someone will ride it . A boy wont care what he is riding until you get him riding with others .

If that doesn't scream 'Busa with a sticker kit and knobbies' I don't know what does?

That looks like a Honda NSF100 with a nice paint job. Great bikes, handle awesome even if you're too big for them. : )

OK, we pulled he trigger and bought Ted's XR100R.

So, is there a 200 or 250 that can support my immense mass? This could do double duty as my wife has some interest in riding. A V-Strom buddy has a KDX200 for sale, but I'd prefer a 4 stroke.

The kdx is the ultimate woods bike, IMO. In stock trim, it's sprung for a 110lb girl, you do the math. Get yourself something Austrian, and don't look back.

Why do I need a plated bike, since my sons is not?

The guys on advrider seem to think that's one trade off too many.

You need a plated bike to come out and play with the adults. Granted, your alone time away from the family might be scarce, but a plated dirty offers tons more freedom than having to kart everything all the time. It just makes sense.

So, he's had is birthday and now knows he's got a dirt bike.

Is there any sort of program that could teach him to ride safely? Everything is paved around here. We can get the rest of the gear he needs.

Been looking for a dirt course for my girlfriend and nephews/sister in-law/her husband to take and found a website for a place on the south shore that teaches the MSF dirt school http://www.planetdirt.net/faq.html haven't talked to them yet but figured it might be what you are looking for.

What about the Wachusett Valley Rider's Club? Do they have any instruction? I'd like to find someplace unpaved for him to start out on.

    +1

This is an MSF sanctioned course run completely in the dirt.

Do they mention anywhere on the site that the course is run on pavement. I don't remember seeing that. As klp mentioned, I thought it was only run in the dirt.

Is the planet dirt course appropriate for a young boy?

Planet Dirt looks perfect: they have kids-level classes.

Nice, glad you found it to be a good fit.

I found them by doing a google search on MSF dirt riding course and then going to the MSF page and doing a locate on the schools nearest Boston. There may be others local as well dirt planet was just the one I found.

Yeah they have got the only game in town for MSF dirt school. I think the next closest is in NY though CT may have some by now.

I believe training wheels still runs the dirtbike MSF in Plympton, MA.
