MSF teaches you how to ride a bike at slow speeds and how to brake at slow speeds. Track days teaches you how to ride a bike at high speeds and how to brake at high speeds. It also teaches you survival skills on the street. MSF is very basic but everyone should take it. Track days are far more valuable to be a safe rider on the street.

MSF is designed to bring a brand new rider into a safe environment to learn how to operate a motorcycle using correct technique. It also teaches the mental approach needed to lower the odds o an incident during our first year or so of riding. It does these very well. I wouldn't let a family member ride on the street without MSF first.

It's not perfect, but it's a great deal better than self-teaching in my opinion.

How is it that when you ride your motorcycle down the street, you don't "family guy fall" over? Or like in the Progressive commercial with the guy on the mid-life crisis chopper?

I bet you don't even wear any hi-vis!

My dad taught me to ride. First time I rode I wound up in the woods. That poor Rebel 250.

I took it after I already had 3yrs/20k miles under my belt. It saves me 10 percent on my insurance every year which covered the cost of the course after a few years, now its straight savings. I had good coaches and even though I was already an experienced rider I still learned a few things. I didn't necessarily NEED the course but it certainly wasn't a waste of time and it saves me money every year. Calling it a waste of money is a very short sighted viewpoint

    What is MSF?

Knowing Jay, it's probably an STD test.

Re: I never took the MSF

I much agree with JonnyV. I had been completely 100% self-taught and rode for 6 years without getting killed or seriously hurt. I did have TWO simple accidents though, both of which I can say with confidence would have been avoided if I'd learned what was taught to me in books and in a couple of ERC courses about rider awareness. I had taken some 13 years off and only took the ERC after I'd restarted riding.

As pointed out, the savings on the insurance for having the education was enough to justify the expense (ERC is minimal money), but the simple mantras drilled into me are the real value.

I take staying alive pretty seriously, and the older I get the more it means to me. And fuck YOU.

Re: I never took the MSF

Took it in the spring of 2005. I took it because I had no idea how to operate a motorcycle and wanted to learn. At the end of the class I was riding a bike like I'd be riding for years. It's definately helpful for people who've had zero experience with motorcycles.

For people who already have experience, I can see your point where it might be a waste of time/money. But at the same time you save 10% off your insurance so that savings actually pays for the class over time and then puts money back in your pocket. Basically repeating what JohnnyV said.

It ain't necessary.... but it's a rootin' tootin' good idea.

Statistically shown that it's saved a lotta lives.

Re: I never took the MSF

I had never ridden a motorcycle or dirt bike before in my life. How the hell else was I supposed to get into it? Probably the best $275 I've ever spent. I taught my buddy to ride in a parking lot using the exact same techniques but I didn't have anyone to do the same for me. Plus, it was a lot of fun.

I admit, I fell for it.

A MSF instructor on a bike with loud pipes coated with high-viz plasti-dip would be INVINCIBLE! Yo.
