Don't believe everything you think.
1993 CBR900RR
Piped, gearing, jetted
Great first bike
No stickers, dodge viper red, polished frame, tinted double bubble.
INSANELY good looking bike. Very fast bike.
I was talking about buying a bike, and a friend of mine was leaving town for the summer and said if I paid for insurance and registration I could ride it for the summer. Never got it inspected because the tires failed and I wasn't paying to put tires on someone elses bike.
What a great summer of 2005... I was 24, met my wife that summer.
First bike I actually owned? I bought a 2003 Honda RC51 in 2008 for commuting rt. 9 to Worcester. Still have the bike. Got it with 16k miles, getting close to 40k miles.
I still consider the CBR my first bike though.
Great thread RandyO!

1982 Yamaha XS400 Special II. Quickly graduated to an 05 SV650. Did not enjoy that Yamaha.
What's the difference between a bolt and a screw?
First you screw, then you bolt.
1982 KZ-1000 LTD. Still own it (needs work) and yes it has a Kerker.

after my Honda 90, in high school, and a couple years later after college, my CB125S, I was away from motorcycling for 25 years, when I returned, I had an '82 Yamaha XV920R for a year, then my first new bike, a 99 SV650

My college roommate got his M license summer 2005 and bought a CBR600. After that, I got interested in riding, signed up for MSF the following spring, and had been researching bikes - pretty much decided on an EX500 or a GS500, whichever I could get a better deal on.
One weekend in the early spring, our other roommate’s older brother came to visit/party for the weekend. We get talking about bikes, I mention I’m taking MSF soon, he says “want to buy my bike?”
I replied “what is it?”
He says “2001 Ninja 500.”
“How much?”
“Hmm, how about $1500?”
“Deal!” (Older 90’s models were selling for 2500-3000 at the time)
That was a perfect first bike. I put 15k miles on that bike commuting over a few years, some days commuting 100-150 miles. Sold it to my brother as his first bike in ~2011, its still in his garage, hasn’t ridden in 4-5 years. I told him I want first dibs if he wants to unload it; not sure why I’d buy it for other than sentimental reasons.

Me buying the KZ-1000 was my late father's excuse to get back into motorcycling. He bought an '81 KZ-1100A (shaft drive) that also had a Kerker. I still have that bike as well but it unfortunately needs work too.
When I was shopping for a motorcycle in high school, I was looking for something like a Nighthawk 750 or similar. Most were either beaten to death or so clean I couldn't afford them. I found an amazing deal on the KZ-1000 so I had my father come with me to check it out since I had never ridden anything that large before. He took off like a bat out of hell up the road, spun around, and came back with a big shit eating grin. "Yeah, he'll take it" is all he said.

other than the 2 bikes I owned 50 years ago, I still have my XV920R, and a second one for parts, my SV650, (motor in a box partially disassembled) my V-strom, K-Pipe, & AK550. I tend to run things into the ground rather than sell while they still have value, or trade in.
all my bikes are incomplete projects, even the ones I have registered and ride regularly, K-Pipe needs to be stiffened, and my AK550 is new but no farkles yet

2000 Honda shadow.
I didn't know shit about shit for motorcycles. Got a big kid job when I was 22 and used my first few paychecks to buy it. Borrowed a buddies truck and drove to Central NJ to buy it. Unloaded it at a storage unit since I still lived with my parents and I was reasonably sure they'd kill me when they saw it. Plus I had no idea how to ride. I took the msf class in the spring. Went to all but the last day because it was absolutely pouring when I woke up. They still held the class. I of course failed because I didn't show up. Cause that's what you do when your 22 years old with a ton of money and time to burn and almost zero personal responsibility. Taught myself to ride with a buddy and then passed the test at the dmv. I ended up taking the msf course about 5 years later when my wife got her license.
