    New bike brake in

I will say it right off, I'm a sport bike newb and have never owned one. Now, I just baught a new one and was wondering about how to brake it in. Some of my friends say that the bes way to break in a bike is to beat the shit out of it. On the other hand the manufacturer says that you should take it easy for the 1st few hundred miles. What do you guys think?

Ride it easy for the first 100 miles. DO NOT lug the motor (revs too low for the gear) and don't cruise at constant revs. You want to keep the motor accelerating or decelerating as much as you can. Use all the gears, and don't go higher than 6000rpm or so. Once you get to 3 or 4 hundred miles, let the revs go up to 8 or 9 k or so a couple of times BRIEFLY. At 500 miles, change the oil and filter, then slowly start to bring the revs up higher and higher until you get to 1000 miles and you can go to redline. Change the oil again at 1000 miles (no need for filter this time). Don't go to synthetic oil until you have at least 3000 miles on the bike.

    Just my opinion. YMMV

If you have a brand new bike, then you must have the owners manual, I'd read it and go by what they say, the important thing as Degsy said is not to lug the motor, you should vary the revs and let the motor go thru heating & cooling cycles.

sure, you can beat the shit out of it and is may end up with 0.25 more horsepower after break in than going by manufacturers specs, but also, it's more likely to be a grenade. Have you ever heard the saying, a motor runs best just before its going to blow...

I broke my SV in according to specs, it gradually increased power until about 5000 miles, now I have 50,000 miles on it and I haven't done anything to the engine other than routine maintenance, valves are still within tolerance and have never needed adjustment, it still runs like new and I fully expect to get over 100k with it still running like new.

Hey AMan, because you're a new member and we're all such nice people, give us the bike for a month and we'll properly break it in for you.

The same holds true for girls... anytime you get a new chick just let us know and we'll help break her in too! Me first of course.
