Now that you identified the problem I would, when time allows, trace that wire that should be ground back through the harness until you discover why it is no longer ground. Sometimes in factory harnesses the ground has many junction points and it is possible one may be corroded or coming apart and could lead to more odd electrical issues in the future.

Suzuki TL1000S wiring harness are notorious for this type of thing. Lucky me I happen to own one.......

Oh yeah, nice job figuring it out and it's great that the guys that helped out did that as well.

This thread should be the poster child for smarts, friendly KNOWLEDGEABLE assistance, and fucking patience...

I am always impressed when people are able to put what they know to practical use. And REALLY impressed when someone can keep complex and multiple iterations of troubleshooting in some sort of useful order!

Well done. (And yeah, I do feel a little guilty for my thoughts when you talked about running out of gas...!)

I have found one person online that had a similar ground issue.
They think it maybe related to removing the EXUP valve cables and not disabling the EXUP valve permanently. I guess the theory is the EXUP valve is still moving with throttle inputs all the time, but with no load. I'll have to look and see if the wiring from the EXUP valve traces back to the same ground has the headlight harness?

Now, anyone feel like solving a surging idle issue on a 4 month old 2015 Subaru WRX?
    Yeah, the dealership.

Yeah, can't say I feel much pain on my end. Had the bike since new and it has somewhere north of 60k on it now which were mostly put on in the first 4-5 years of ownership. It has been a good bike and is fun as hell to ride on street or track.

I honestly can't say I've had any big issues with mine either at 60k+ (lost track of the mileage after the gauge swap). It is a pretty quirky bike, though.
