New Old Bike in the garage

Picked up a 2000 VFR800 for short $. 11k miles reasonable shape, going to show it some TLC and see where it leads.

    Pics tomorrow.

Thanks! Mine is basically the opposite of what he wants in terms of condition, but I'll shoot him a line anyway.

The 90's called and they want their motorcycle back!

    Pics up! First the good...

    Now the bad...

...and the questionable. I missed these two rim dents on my inspection. The look like normal urban pothole damage. The tires hold air and no "weirdness is noticeable while riding. What are our thoughts about risk level in normal use and options if the need to be fixed?

I would ride the shit out of that thing.. wheel dents and all.
If it holds air, party on.

Love the VFR so damned much. The sounds! My '91 was just awesome.
Unfortunately I could tell it was going to be an automatic speeding ticket generator.

Re: New Old Bike in this garage

    Thanks

This is my 3rd time with a 5th gen VFR

While it cleaned up pretty well with some compound and elbow grease, as long as it stops, goes and the suspension is reasonable I fully intend to use it for my middle aged version of hooning around.

My days of 500 mile days on one of these are past but it just feels so connected and easy compared to the ponderous but effective VFR1200X

As of today the yellow peril is registered and on the road.

I wonder if I'll be transported back to Y2K if I hit 88mph?

Jamie Daughtery makes very popular upgrades for VFR owners if you want something less expensive than Ohlins!

Good to hear it's back on the road.

So, is it better in every way to the latest and greatest? Just getting a gauge for how far we have not come in the last 20ish years

Re: New Old Bike in this garage

No, it's certainly not as refined as modern sport bikes. No abs, traction control and limited suspension adjustability.

I've owned 6th gen and ridden 7th gen VFR800's and the 7th gen is particularly nice.

But it cost 2600, insurance is 123 per year and that V4 motor is still musical.

It holds up well for a bike that's almost old enough to vote, and on public roads at sane speeds with average skill me piloting, it is still a lot of fun and that's all that matters to me.

What's the over/under that you will 'leave well enough alone'? Knowing your skills in fabrication, painting, and general mechanical abilities, I'd be curious to see what 'well enough alone' looks like come the spring...!!!

Re: New Old Bike in this garage

    Dave,

I think you overestimate my abilities. The tool I'm most effective with is my wallet!

I've had VFR's set up for, weekend Berkshires sport riding, cross country touring and urban commuting duty. In the end I got rid of the special windscreens, aftermarket seats and heli-bars and just ridden them stock. This will comfortably do 200 mile days as is and if I feel like more, the VFR1200x made 750 mile days reasonable effortless on my recent fears trip out to Sturgis, and back.

This is my first time with 2 bikes. The goal for this one is to ride it cheap.

You'd like it even more with an Ohlins rear on it..
