    Bike knocked over

    Hey Guys,

Looks like someone knocked over my bike while it was in the garage last night. Feeling terrible right now. Still waiting to call insurance as they aren't open yet. Can you folks weigh in on this? Thanks.

    Re: Bike knocked over

    I've always wondered about that.

What happens if someone trips or looses their balance and accidentally knocks over your bike ? And the guy is apologetic etc. but say there is minor damage... do you ask him for his information? What if he refuses ? Do you bring him to court ? Call the cops ?

Bummer. What's your self assessment of the damage? If it's nothing but a few scratches it might not be worth the trouble of repairing it. A simple tip-over typicallt isn't going to do any structural damage. Just cosmetic.

I didnt have enough time to look at it. Had to be at work. From what I saw,

    Left blinker broke off.
    Gear lever is broken.
    New dents on tank.

Thankfully the guy left a note.

Even had they not left a note your rates shouldn't increase. At-least I can say that for Liberty Mutual because that was a question I asked. What if I just come back to my bike and it's damaged when parked. They stated it was not my fault so the damages would not increase my policy.

    According to the insurance adjuster...

when i crashed my motocycle into to a telephone pole at 35 mph they said the damage was around $3k.

the guy I sold the damaged bike to got it looking mint again with a set of new $600 plastics one new front rotor and rim and a fork rebuild that cost him less that $1k total.

if I had to do it all over again I wouldn't have called the insurance adjuster and just fix the bike myself unless it was really totaled and not repairable.

to each his own though. at least you wern't riding it so you wont get a black mark on your insurance.

Yep had I just bought the replacement parts myself and fixed it myself it could have been fixed quite cheap

    It's an sv right?
I would say that is a pretty durable bike and probably just cosmetic damage.
Guy left a note, so go through insurance as tanks can be expensive.

In that case, I would sum up the replacement parts and see roughly what it would total up to. I've handed someone a 700 dollar check for damages just to avoid insruance... woulda cost me a 500 dollar deductable anyway, might as well spend 200 and avoid surcharges on my policy.

Or go through insurance... either way works.

    Re: Bike knocked over

Last time I had someone drive into my parked car and leave a note, I was honest with them about the total cost for repairs-as-it-was, total for what I was actually going to repair, what I'd be expecting from insurance if I filed a claim against their insurance (no reason to file with mine, they were at fault), and asked them to send me what they thought fair given those numbers, or offered to talk to their insurance if they preferred—I wanted to give them some credit for leaving the note.

They gave me a check for replacing the bumper cover and the broken signal lens; I replaced the lens as I had planned on and pocketed the rest. YMMV, of course, but I'd at least get a quote for repairs and offer them the chance to pay directly instead of involving insurance, as an insurance claim is almost always going to cost more in the long run than paying out of pocket.

I could do this. But I'm currently in a tight situation with money and I can't afford to pay to get my bike towed and assess the damages myself. I am also trying to get out of my lease to leave the building and this seems to be the worst time that this could have happened. So I figure that going through insurance is my only option right now.

Also, my building is known for drunk drivers. So this doesn't come as a surprise. Except that it would take extreme amount of skill to knock my bike over as it has an immense amount of space on both sides and it is parked in a corner that no car needs to back into.

    Re: Bike knocked over

    Guys,

The guy just texted me saying it was his brother that hit the bike and that he needs one day to get his brother's(who is on a plane to Asia) details. I told him I will have to call my insurance and find out if that is acceptable. Do you think I can wait a day? Personally, I don't want to as this seems fishy that his brother hit my bike and left the country in the same night.

How does that seem fishy? If the guy's not from there, he may have been unfamiliar with the garage and may have been in a rush to get to the airport, etc.

I would call your insurance company and let them know what is going on so that there is a record of you calling at least. That way, if the guy doesn't come through, you did your part.

    Re: Bike knocked over

I hate to think the worst of people , but given the chance, majority of people will take off , your lucky to get a note.
Tanks are costly , retail on mine was over $600. that's a cheaper one, some cost more. Plus time/labor for repair, someone has to do the work.
Don't go soft, I've gotten screwd 3 times, 1st I watched a young chick back into my bike in the city of albany, I knew she had been drinking, I didn't want to call the police and get her a dui, so I got her info, she left smileing at me , she blew me off and their was nothing I could do about it, cost me a radiator, her bumper dented the side near the filler cap and started leaking.
Had bike parked in front of suburban area apt on side walk, landscaper hits pole holding a birdfeeder with his mower , birdfeeder with about 5lb of seed falls 15' down onto my tank. BANG .dent !. He Moved everything back , didn't say anything, I found a pile of bird seed under my bike.
Bike in garage on a bikepro front wheel chock, worker from well company used the garage as a walk thru to do work, end of day I went downstairs to find my bike on its side, bikepro still locked onto front tire and bolted to plywood. I really don't know how he tipped it over ,you literly have to lift it up and push. The tire staying locked in the wheel choch saved some things from damage. I think ,police wouldn't do anything, not even a report.I've gotten screwed a couple times, my bike is trashed for the most part.
Moral of story, be nice, but have no mercy. Get the highest estamate you can, and keep your bike in nice condition.

dang - that sux. It makes me nervous parking in the cirty garages, but I don't have any other options really, living in the city. I try to stay parked where the cameras can see, just in case anything should happen.

Good luck with everything! Hope it all works out for you!

Called the insurance and told them that the guy seems like a nice person and that I do believe him but I don't want to take my chances. They scheduled a visit this Friday to assess the damages. I told them that I would like for my bike to be taken to GMD Computrak. Not sure how this would pan out.

I would report it. At first I was going to brush off the incident with my bike, all I saw were a few scratches. After looking it over for a few hours, I've found that well over $1k in damage was done.

So they said that they will be coming in this Friday AM to assess the damages. Anything I should let them know about during this time? Do they usually agree to sending my bike over to the place that I wish for them to send it to?

Without visible frame damage, they won't consider Computrack as it is far away unless you pay the cost of getting it to Computrack yourself.

Not even sure if there is any frame damage at this point. I hope they know a better(closer) place where this can be assessed/fixed if they think that there is no extensive damage.
