    first bike recommendation

so my brother wants to get a bike this year. hes got the msf course scheduled but hes really liking the duc 748. i told him that bike is too high maint, expensive to repair for his newby self. he wants a twin, doesnt really want a 4cyl. I suggested a fairinged sv but hes not too excited about it. Doesnt really like the monsters either. Anyone think of any fairinged twins other then the sv?

Have him check out an older KLR 650. Not a twin but lots of fun to ride, easy to work on, plenty of cheap parts out there and you can usually get a deal on one. I have a newer one now but even my older 97 was fun to ride.

i dont think he'll go for that. i suggested a drz400sm but he doesnt want a sumo/dual sporter. him and every other 19yr old wants a faired ss bike. just dont want him to buy a duc cause hes not real mechanically inclined yet, and i dont want him to be pushed off motorcycling if it breaks down or needs maint.

...and we would rather not see a 748 tossed down the street by a newb...its bad enough when some asshole decides to throw his Aprilia into the trees a week after buying it...

Speed Triple? compromise from a twin to a four and bullet proof. I think the best starter bike out there is an F4I They look cool need no maintenece and wont kill you to quick.

Picking a FF starter twin is like a good game of russian roulette.

I dont think they are all that bad, very predictable power compaired to most twins or fours. A bit more upright and controlable that alot of sport bikes.

19 years old? Inexperienced? Wants a faired twin? Simple, a used Ninja 500. Anything more and he'll probably end up in trouble....not that you can't get in trouble with a Ninja 500....but they are fantastic daily drivers, maintenance free, perform admirably, and retain their value well. If he keeps it rubber side down, he will be able to sell it, get most of his money back, and move up in a year or so.

Didn't read all the responses but the GS500F is a faired twin.. looks better naked though, IMHO. And insurance will be nice and cheap for him as well!

Go old school, cb350 cafe style looks cool, can't kill whatever 19 year old chick is on the back if there is a cafe tail on it and they can be had for $1500 all day.
