So what do you guys do to keep your bike safe at night?

I don't have garage parking, and used to use my friend's open garage in brighton to park my bike... but that didn't really work out.

I was considering buy some 4ft of HEAVY ass chain, with a monster lock. And lock it through the swing arm and rear tire to a lamp post or something, with a bike cover... maybe even a front diskbrake lock.

Insurance. Most security measures won't stop a determined thief. If you do use a chain, make sure that the ground cannot be used as leverage to break it (put it up high enough that a pair of bolt cutters cannot have one end rested on the ground, which will basically double the amount of leverage that a thief would have)

1/2 inch case-hardened chain was common as a theft deterrent in the 70's when I started to ride. I used to work here (a very long time ago) and they sold "motorcycle chain" in any length, cut while you wait. http://www.philiparand.com/index.htm

If u need chain, I can give u some, just take from work is scrap for what we doing but they are high carbon cromme steel......U can't cut those with a saw you will need torch....... I live in ri, pm if u want some.

Keep it at the rear of your house under a cover, concrete into the ground a lock ring, wire up a motion activated security light and invest in a good chain.. that should keep the bastards away! (thieves hate lights at night!)

Luckily I don't need to worry much where I live (not a big bike theft problem in Burlington, VT), but when I went on my two-week trip recently I put a thick cable with a heavy padlock through the frames of my two bikes staying at home, just in case. They're parked at the end of my driveway, next to the house, and my car is parked in front of them to block them from the street (which is a dead-end residential street). If someone wanted to steal either or both bikes, it would be a pain in the ass for them, and the neighbors would likely notice.

i park my motorcycle on the street in brighton. i have a dowco security cover padlocked on #1, a disc lock #2, an alarm #3, steering column lock #4, theft insurance #5, plus it usually parked within 50 ft of where i sleep. There really isn't much more I can do.

It's simple, find a safe place to store your bike. A friend's open garage isn't safe!!! I don't know if you rent or own, but start there. If you rent, find another place that is more bike friendly. Look for a ground level apartment. I've seen a guy roll his R6 right in the front door at night. If you own, find a parking spot and install a ground anchor and lights and a security camera. If you can't do this stuff at your current place in Brighton, MOVE!!! Look for a place outside of the city.

I insure mine to replacement value, ride it, take the security FOBs, hope for the best. A bike that weighs 700lbs is it's own security. The rest? Whaddya gonna dooo?
