    bike security during work

I usually work in a situation where I cannot take my bike, but on occasion I work in a location which is a good place to ride to. Unfortunately this place is lawrence, and I'm worried about leaving my bike in a distant parking lot in downtown lawrence. The nature of my work will keep me out of sight from my bike.

Does anyone have any tips or used techniques/ locations that would aid me in keeping my bike safe while allowing my trip to work to involve my motorcycle?

a good lock will keep most people away. Where in Lawrence? Most tech parks aren't that bad.

It would be left in a parking lot on the eastern most end of canal street. Opposite side of the water from the New Balance shop, its a huge parking lot, but iv seen kids messing around in there far too often.

Seriously, why don't more people understand this?

Comprehensive insurance increases your premium by like $5 a month.

Buying a lock or alarm or anything like that will cost you at least $200.

Plus its going to take a rather large nutsack to steal your bike in broad daylight.

I have comprehensive insurance. And daylight is the best time to steal it because people don't ask questions. you put a bike in a truck, and complain about it breaking down to anyone who stops nearby... done deal.

not to mention you don't have to be trying to steal the bike to drop it... kids like to jump on things they don't own.

I worked in Lawrence for ten years ('83 to '96, just not consecutive), and rarely rode to work. However, in those ten years my car was broken into just once. On the other hand, we knew to stay away from the paid lot (west end of Canal Street!) where the attendant was on the take.

Recommendation? Drive a junker when you go.

Well then, I don't see how any lock available to you is going to prevent any of that. Unless whoever owns that parking lot is cool with you drilling into the asphalt, there's really nothing you can do to prevent any of the situations you just listed.

If you can't lock it to something other than itself, don't believe for a minute it's safe. They're quickly lifted and tossed in mini vans so disc locks might not even by noticed until they're already at the chop shop. If you know another rider, locking the two front tires together makes them difficult to lift. Difficult, but not impossible.

I'm the first to always say ride to work, however personally if I was in your situation I would not.

Looks like its going to be raining tomorrow anyway. I'll just scout for something to lock it to while I'm down there.

    Thanks for the ideas.
