Bike wont run, I'm pulling the carbs, things to look for?

I'm cheap, but I'm not ghetto.

It would just figure I'd get the bike running and then a chunk of RTV sealant would find its way into the jets, making everything I did a complete waste of time.

Silicone based products like RTV shouldn't be used in places that are under constant contact with gasoline, as silicone is soluble in gasoline.

Oh well, now my car is breaking too, so hopefully I'll get the bike fixed and just use that as a daily driver while my car becomes a complete heap.

silicone is ONLY soluble in gasoline BEFORE it cures(hardens-dries)

Its running

Got my new seals in today, re-assembled the carbs, popped them back on with the help of my brother. Filled the bowls up with a funnel and some hose, I still have to fuck with my gas tank. But got it gassed, charged the battery, and after a minute of trying to crank it over 3-4 times, it fired right up.

Runs kind of wonky, but I have a feeling synching them and getting a proper fuel source to them will take care of that.

Was a really good feeling knowing I tore it all apart myself, put it back together, and it fired up on pretty much the first shot.

DIY can be a beautiful thing. You now can practically work on any motorcycle carb. When in doubt check everything to the book, and clean. Some times you fix something that way without realizing it.

OOPS! I have worked on a set of Gold wing carbs. An early eighties 1100. A co-worker needed some help. I'll amend what I wrote. You can now work on practically any in-line four carb set. Yeah, they were a pain compared to the in-lines I've tinkered with.

Got the bike all buttoned back up and running like a top.

Went out for like 30 miles just to get the feeling back, oh how refreshing. It wasnt even that cold, like 30 degrees and windy.

The new chin curtain I got for my Shoei makes a world of difference, was so nice riding without my entire neck freezing, instead just a small portion of it froze.

They've even started street sweeping the next town over from me, so in a week or two I'll have some clean roads to ride. woooot

FUnny thing is........there was nothing wrong with the carbs I figured out.

The fucking petcock in the "on" position doesnt let fuel through, in the reserve position it runs just fine. So my carbs probably always had fuel in them, just not enough to submerge the jets, and the pump wasnt getting any fuel there.

So it still doesnt work exactly as it should, but at least I know it will run sucking on the reserve tube. Just one more small project to do that, either tear down and clean out the one now, or just get an ebay-er and rebuild that and slap it on.

Oh well, at least now I know how to work my carbs.

Whether we like it or not, the process of elimination is more often than not, a longer path. Just think how much that might have cost, if you had the good fortune, to have a less experienced mechanic at a dealership figure it out. Kudos for you.

Oh for sure, I could have saved myself a big headache and paid 2, 3, 400 dollars to have the dealership troubleshoot and pull it apart, but as far as the carbs go, 3 hours of my time and $30 in some seals was it all cost me.

Bike runs like a top though, I'm going out to put some miles on tomorrow so long as temps are above.......I dunno, 20.
