Bike won't start

I posted this here because it seems to get more views than the maintenance area. You can read about what happened to me last night here http://www.nestreetriders.com/forum/...5&pagenumber=2

But basically I went to start my bike and the battery was dead after it started fine earlier in the day. Tried jumping it and got it running, drove down the street about 100ft and it died on me. Now the battery is pretty old. I've never changed it in the 4 years I've owned it and I am the third owner (don't know when they might have changed it). Previous to this I have been having a problem with the guages cutting out (basically flickering on and off over and over).

So where should I start. Does this sound like a R/R problem? Or a "get a new battery you idiot" problem? Or something else?

I would start with a new battery. That is usually the weak link in the electrical system of a motorcycle. Even if it turns out to be the R/R, you will still want a new battery to go along with it.

Do you have the shop manual for your bike? They usually have very good instructions on how to identify a bad battery, R/R, stator, or rotor.

I threw a new battery in it and I think it solved the problem. I havn't had a chance to road test it yet so hopefully tomorrow I'll know for sure.

Don't ride too far. If the battery isn't chargin it'll die on you again.

that's the plan. doesn't look like I will get a chance to ride it today though. I might have to work in Dorchester again. maybe I will take it out tonight
