Very different bikes. The Hyperstrada is great - I would love to own one at some point. It is tiny compared to the SMT - much much smaller and really for one person (unless you and your significant other are smaller than average). I have an FJ-09 which I would consider similar - bigger than the hyperstrada but smaller than the KTM. Lighter than the KTM and same weight as the HYS939 at 463 lbs wet. It is refined and fun, but I still wonder if the HYS939 would have more character and fun for commuting.

someone must have owned one at some point, although I have to say do not remember this bike at all, Gixxers & Katananananas
Yup, had an RF900R for many years. That bike could do it all, although it was much more aligned for the sport side of sport touring, which is what it was advertised as. Putzing around, 2-up long hauls, thrashing back roads, eating up highways, track days...I ran it through the ringer. I had 50,000 - 60,000 miles on mine when I binned it.

I was always bummed they didn't develop that line further than what they did. And basically, they didn't do anything to develop them. I ran Tour Master soft saddle bags on mine when needed as well as their tail pack & tank bag. Those 900's were great bikes. If they put a little effort into developing those, they could have evolved into the GSXS GT perhaps.

Could the argument be made that the Hayabusa is the development of Suzuki's hyper sport touring motorcycle? The model number of the Busa is GSX1300R isn't it?

Quick Google/Wikipedia search shows that the RF series of bikes that was based on the GSXR1100R motor was discontinued in 1999 and the Busa started life in 1999.

Yes, the RF900R was basically a detuned GSXR1100 motor with more usable midrange. It also used the same transmission, and I believe some GSXR750 parts were even used. I pretty much got mine when it rolled off the truck so the aftermarket exhaust, intake & jet kit (although it had smaller carbs) was all for a GSXR1000. I'm told certain genre RF's, Bandits & GSXR's shared header pipes. As I said, the exhaust I had on mine was for a GSXR. I've also been told the stock exhaust (complete) from my RF900R is a direct fit upgrade for certain Bandit 900's.

They were touted as an answer to bikes like the VFR, CBR1000F, ZZR1100, etc. But Zook never really put much into developing them after the initial launch. I think they got updated/upgraded suspension a couple years after the release, but that was about it.

The RF900R actually holds some endurance/speed records if I'm remembering correctly.

Neil Hoare. I can't remember his handle.
Long time TTD staffer. Fantastic guy.
I'm actually about to go grab a beer with him in a few

I tried talking Sylwia into buying that bike, but me thinks it's gonna go for a LOT more than what we'd be willing to shell out

Royal Enfield ceased production in Britain sometime in the late 60s early 70s. I believe an Indian company purchased everything including the name and they're now manufactured in India.
