You can set the SMH10 to go into interom mode when you start speaking, or so that you need to push the intercom button, then speak. I found that the voice activated intercom goes on by wind most of the time, and switched it to the manual control.

After watching this video, I'm thinking of going with the SMH-10:

I have an older Q2 paired set. As Ken said above I use it when doing personalized instruction at the track and when riding with my girlfriend. Been using it for a number of years now and they've held up well.

Most of the (few) problems that I've had with it stems from how it's installed in the helmet, ie where the speakers are and how close to your ears you can get them. But typically they've been very reliable for me.

Only thing I don't like is that I can't use bluetooth for music (newer ones can), BUT otherwise it works pretty great with my iPhone. I can use siri to do everything siri can do (check time, check messages, send texts, place calls, etc) and it will do turn-by-turn navigation as well.

Ken and the other instructors have been using the new Interphone units which I also gave a whirl down at New Jersey. They also worked well.

My big thing is loudness and gps/music sync from my phone.
SMH-10 does have the wheely joggy button. SMH-10R does not have it. I was confused, apologies.

Yes, I think the SMH-10 speakers are the same as the "upgraded" SMH-5 speakers.

Just adding another thumbs up to the SMH10. I think the most we've gotten linked up are 6 people, but in theory you could link up as many as you want if you daisy chain them properly.

Re: bluetooth / inter rider communications?

I have the SMH10 and it's been really really good for intercom between me and my girlfriend on the back. On backroads the sound has been perfect for music, but when you get on the open highway it's a bit loud, I can hear the music but sometimes cant make out the lyrics very well. I havent tried to see if I could update the software on it yet to get the louder, but I was told that if it says hello to you when you turn it on that means its the new one. I also attribute the loudness to my helmet as its maybe a half a size too big for me and its always been a fairly loud helmet. I would reccomend them to anyone asking.

The new software update does raise the volume a bit. I haven't updated yet because the volume is just fine for me. Probably depends on the helmet. Give it a shot, it may work better for you.

I updated the software on my SMH-5 units as soon as I received them. They do say "Hello" when you turn them on, but I do not know if they did that before the upgrade.

I, and 3 of my friends, have the SMH10. We all love ours. The group intercom is great on long rides. Mine is plenty loud for me to hear the lyrics and music just fine at highway speeds(and then some). My only issue is Siri doesn't always understand me. I'd definitely recommend it, especially at the price I paid. Found them new from a retailer on eBay, the dual pack was $214 or so.

The Scala G4 is not loud enough for me to hear turn-by-turn directions while at speed on the Interstate even without earplugs. I can tell that the robot voice is speaking directions, but cannot tell what it is saying.

Did a quick search while on break. This is the seller I bought them from

Also, it was $114 I paid for each. My bad.

both full-face helmets so i am not 100% sure what will/wont fit or work. anyone have anything like this and can shed some light on the topic?

i like this one because you could have up to 6 people online together
    Martyk,

That's the same exact one that me and my boyfriend are using right now. They've recently updated the headsets with better headphones, better holders [as the previous ones had really shitty, wallpaper type stickies that easily fell off]. These new updates headsets come with holders that you screw together on your helmet (no holes, the screws hold the plates together). The sound quality has improved and it has pretty good range, granted you don't turn a corner and go down quarter of a mile away from your partner. Best bang for buck, I'd highly recommend those.

We're actually looking to see if we can have a 3 way comm, rather than having to press the appropriate button to speak to each rider, but those go for upwards of $200 or more. We might build our own hub from raspberry pie board, or something like that, and connect bluetooth. Anyway, you got my thumbs up for this set.

I believe it's just the microphone setup. The SMH10-11 has a boom mic that you can remove or install in the helmet. The SMH10(that's what I have on my helmet) has a fixed mic.

I might suspect that is a 2011 model SMH-10, seeing as the SMH-10R came out at the end of 2012 (I think). The standard SMH-10 looks like a rounded off triangle (just like a slightly larger SMH-5) with a jog dial, and the SMH-10R is more of a rectangular shape, with push buttons at each end (completely different).
    I could be wrong...

Edit -Yes, the -11 looks to indicate the boom mic.

is one better than the other (smh10 vs smh10-11)? was bout to pull the trigger on a dual pack of smh10 then saw a listing for the smh10-11! right when I thought I had my mind made up... about a $14 difference between the two sets (smh-10-11 being more expensive)

EDIT: nevermind. difference is $70... I think i'll stick with the regular 10 and fixed mic

It's your preference. The SMH10 on my helmet(Speed and Strength 1500) works just fine. If you want to hide the mic a bit more, pay the $14 and have it set up that way. I'd add a pic of my setup, but I took the car to work today

I have not read this whole thread.

I have and love the Interphone F5. Us it for rider to rider communication, streams music through my iphone, turn by turn directions and I can answer a quick call if I want. That is all.

Re: bluetooth / inter rider communications?

    Different failures each.

One of them won't charge. When put on the charger the red light (which indicates charging) does a faint flashy thing. Does it forever. Won't ever power up.

The other simply won't turn on. This happened to one of mine before. Sent it in under warranty and it was fixed. No questions asked. If I use my finger nail, in just the right place on the top button I could get it to work. That's also the "phone button" and when riding I don't have any chance of actuating it. Not worth effin' with it.

At this point I've replaced the helmet mounts with Sena. The sena has a stooopid requirement that you must mount it and plug it in. The scala I could easily switch put going down the road. These require a stop (for me) to switch out. Scala's are sitting in a cabinet. The Edna's aren't perfect. They're better.

    Mmmm, love those Edna's.

Alright. I have not experienced issues like that.
Mine has started cutting out. I think it is the noise canceling feature gone haywire. The volume will randomly drop and then come back for no apparent reason.

I believe I can disable the noise canceling function. Although I don't remember how. UI is too complicated.

Just a heads up for Sena users. We've noticed the latest update has caused some issues with daisy chaining. If you'd like to be able to talk with more than 3 people don't get the latest download.
