Vintage transmission question

I've got a line on a 81 GS650 that i need the motor out of. Thing is the owner says the shifter is jammed out of gear. The motor is not seized and turns over. Any ideas on what could be wrong?

Jammed "out of gear"? I have never heard that one before. This could be many different things, from the simplest: the shift lever hitting a case or slipping on the spline, to a medium difficulty: the shift shaft pawl or the shaft itself got bent or displaced from the bike tipping over (often times repairable with only a side cover removal), to very difficult: transmission shift fork, shift drum, or gear damage (requiring complete engine disassembly).
But I would look at things in that general order...

I talked to the owner and he said he thinks it's stuck between gears.

Do you need a motor for one of these? I think I have one of these things out back of the shop. I can take a look if you are interested. I just want the thing out of here.
