I bought a used trackbike with an unknown past

It's a 98 GSXR 600. I was wondering if anyone had any information on the bike and I have a few general questions about getting a used track bike.

Here is what I know of the bike. I bought it from a well known pro racer who I've dealt with before. He said he got it at an estate sale in NH and it was the only track bike in a group of 17 Suzuki's from the sale. He lapped it without problems before he sold it but never raced it. It has custom made fiberglass plastics. Possibly a rebuilt front end and is basically stock aside from that.

The problem I'm having right now is it will start and idle but wont keep a nice idle hot. I am unsure if they are stock brakes in the front. I know between little and nothing about carburetors so any info about the issue would be appreciated. Also I want to look for other potential issues before they come up. I know the obvious like brakes and wheel bearing play and head shake but anything track-bike specific to check would be great.

Here are some pics if anyone could give me some background on the bike it would be great.

The idle issue might be that the valves need to be adjusted or the carbs need to be synched.

GSXR600 forks in '98 were not of the USD variety........ That may be a front end off a 750.

Thank you! Great eye! I just googled it and confirmed that they are not OEM. I wonder what it has for front brakes even more now. I would hate to order the wrong pads and it needs them before it can be raced.

They look like 01-03 gixxer 600/750 forks and brakes

Maybe the forks, but the calipers are not from an 01-03 GSX-R600 or 00-03 GSX-R750. Same calipers as the 03+ SV1000. They were 4-piston for those years.

EDIT: The 99 GSX-R750 SRAD has USD forks and 6-piston calipers. It might be those.

These are from an 03 SV1000 and are currently on my bike:

Re: I bought a used trackbike with an unknown past

They appear to be the same brakes that are hanging on the wall in my garage which came off of a 99 GSXR750. Used them on my TL until I bought Brembos.

For what it's worth the story you mention about the bike is the same that I was told about that bike when I saw the person who sold it to you riding it and just out of curiosity asked him where he got it. I know nothing of it's history other than hat conversation.

check everything on a track bike just as you would on a street bike. so pretty much check everything over to make sure stuff is right.

I have a 99 GSXR 750, and that looks exactly like my front end down to the brakes.

Looks like ,at the very least, someone put gsxr 1k brakes on it since they look like 6 piston calipers. They may have changed the forks too but I can't tell..

Why not just pull the pads and see if they have any markings on them?

Than you for helping me pin down the front end on the bike. I wonder if the bike is actually a 750. Would it be common to switch that whole front end out?

It's doable but not a simple switch. I have a 96 gsxr750 and the front looks like mine as well since 96-99 750's were the same. The calipers from 96-99 were also used on 98-03 TLR's, 99-07 busas, 01-05 ZRX's, some ZX9r's and a hand full of other bikes including the above mentioned gsxr1k's from the years mentioned. Some calipers were gold and some black.

Re: I bought a used trackbike with an unknown past

Probably just needs a good carb cleaning and balancing, normally I'd tell you to come by with some beer and I'd check it out but I decided to spend the summer on crutches. I could recomend a reputable repair shop in NB if you want? Steve.

If I can't get the carbs to behave like I want myself I will definitely use that suggestion. I was looking for a new place so I appreciate the suggestion.
