    Brake Stuff

So Rob and I woke up early this mornign adn decided it was a good day to replace our brakes. He was in need of rears and I have been having issues with my fronts. So he gets his done and then I start in on mine. Well, I don't actually need brakes. In fact I easily have more thn half of the life left in them.

So why do they not stop me?

Should I bleed my brake lines? They don't make noise (the occasioanl squeak in the rain, but nothing major), but they feel extremely squishy, like I need to put more pressure on themt han I should in orer to stop. And they take longer to stop than normal. I am not low on fluid and it hasn't changed color or gotten any debris in it.

If I should bleed the lines, how do I do that? What do I need?

    This thread may help.

Has the bike been down recently? Do the front brakes pulse when you apply them?

    They are varnished.

Replace your pads and when you do, sand the rotors with medium grit.

pump them back up before riding and be careful the first few times you grab the front.

Bleeding them is easy but that works too. Just DON'T get brake fluid on your paint!

Bleeding is easy but its a bitch at the same time. Its really a two person job with the regular bleeder screws. I just got me a set of these to try out and they seem to work very well. http://www.speedbleeder.com/
It makes bleeding a lot easier and if you dont have anyone to help out its not a problem.

Get some brake parts contact cleaner
and spray your rotors. After time they get vanished or glazed with gunk and don't have the bite they need.

So that plus new pads and bled lines and you'll be golden. double h pads and you'll be even better.

When was the last time the fluid was changed??

Get a mighty vac brake bleeder and use it to bleed/change the brake fluid. Works great, just keep filling the reservoir with fresh and keep using the bleeder till it comes out clean...

Fluid was changed at the bike's last check-up (6,000 mile). So should I still change the pads even though I have another 10K left on them? Seems like a waste of money..... If I just clean the rotors, will that be as effective with old pads?

one good way to get air out is to remove the cap and the calipers and push the pads all the way in... this should force any air out. if you need pads i have a set that ill sell ya..

Bleeding's a bitch??? A two person job??? Takes all of 20 minutes by yourself, provided you can reach the bleed screws with one hand and your brake lever with the other. You'll cut that time in half with two people...

If you bleed 'em, use a clear line so you can see the bubbles. With the amount of riding you do, you should do 'em a coupla times a season...

If your pads are good and your rotors look good, this is where I'd start...

Well the trick is reaching both which I cant do on the left side and its hard enough to hold the lever and close the right side screw. As I said I just got a set of speedbleeders as they were recommended by a friend and they seem to be working perfectly. Makes bleeding a lot easier as they close themselves.
