On that bike, I'd say a damper is required equipment, and should come standard.
Honestly, should really be on any bike. My RC51 used to have a nasty habit if you braked too hard. IMO its well worth the cost on any bike to ensure it wont happen.

Really sorry to hear about your incident, sounds scary - glad you're (relatively) okay!!

Not directed towards Duey as he has probably already done this, but I hope the advice in the last few posts is actually something along the lines of: (1) get your suspension set up properly, and (2) consider a damper. Nothing makes me cringe as much as when people advocate slapping on a damper on before figuring out if the necessary attention has been paid to the stock suspension. Perhaps was assumed above, but I just want to clarify for any newbies cruising this thread that the one of the best first things you can do is, to the extent possible, adjust your suspension for your weight/riding style. (And while a damper lessens the chances of a tankslapper, it certainly doesn't "ensure" it won't happen.)

OK, some things would make me cringe more than that, like wearing Richard Simmons unwashed workout gear, but not many.

    Well said.

I did have the front suspension setup for my weight and riding style but it was a quick job so I'm not entirely sure if it was done as well as it could have. The bike did handle better for me but still felt a little vague, not sure if it was the bike or just me.

But you are right, over the years when I worked at a few different dealers I did see many people buy a damper as a bandaid for an improperly setup suspension.

Yeah 848 got stolen awhile back (still paying for it sadly too).

But I just got back from Riverside and got the estimate for the repairs, and without the minor cosmetic marks on the frame the damage is sitting just shy of 8k (not counting the "frame" damage from the steering stops). Based on the KBB of the bike I am told the damage would need to be in excess of 11k in order to be "totaled". Mostly cosmetic stuff anyway (frame stuff confirmed by the master tech that its 100% cosmetic and no safety issues) and majority of it was getting replaced anyway so I'm hoping this will all work out for the best

Going to try and get her back on the road asap. Its only been a few days of not riding her and I missed it dearly already.

Re: Brand new hypermotard laid down :(

That kind of a tank slapper is geometry related, not suspension. The bike should be close enough from the factory to not be dangerous.

I had one event like that on my monster. Suspension was set up. Just the right series of bumps set that thing off like a jack hammer on crack. I saved it, much to the surprise of the guy riding behind me. I have short arms, and it pulled me right up past the gas cap on top of the tank. I think now that getting FORWARD is the key to riding one of these out. Give you arms room to bend without tugging harder at the bars. I couldn't steer or brake though...

Anyway Duey, good luck getting it prettied up. I'm sure for 8K you can get a nice damper, wheels, and whatever other goodies you want.

You clearly have no experience on such a machine. The wider the bars and stickier the tires, them MORE prone to headshake and tankslappers. Combine that with a steep rake and aggressive trail geometry and you get a bike that can't track straight under heavy acceleration, and is easily destabilized under braking.

The one guy who tried to race one of these at loudon could not get it to stop shaking no matter how much suspension work they put into it.

Re: Brand new hypermotard laid down :(

I can not, but assuming that you are part of the Ducati team - I issue the following challenge: You come visit me and help me set up my suspension (I have done it and admittedly it is a best guess based on Sport Rider/Factory recommendations combined with what feels right) and in return I will tell everyone what a great guy you are in this area - seriously if you have the technical expertise the real world input is appreciated.

I personally have used rotary style dampers for the last several bikes (my '03 636 was very nervous feeling until I added a GPR unit. As stated previously I encountered a serious head shake on the RC51 after being similarly cut off in traffic which literally threw me off the bike (legs flying around and all) and I was lucky I saved it. The suspension settings were actually dialed in on that bike for my size/weight rider. After adding a Scotts I never had another problem. My Brutale came with one and if it had not I would have added it. I am a street rider, have never done a track day, and deal with potholes, train tracks, uneven pavement, and unconcerned motorists. I consider it a worthwhile investment in saving my ass.

I'm not the final word on the subject by any means, but...

I have ridden many motards on roadcourses, including the hyper and know well how they shake, and also know a bit about the geometry that causes it. I have taken my stock KTM motard from a complete plow in the corners, to one capable of expert race pace.

What kind of information are you offering that would change the game? How can you say that wide bars and sticky tires eliminates the tendency for headshake? I know from my experience that the opposite it true.

And in other news - I agree with Paul! Rode a Hyper at the track (Zack's before he junked the thing) and yeah, it was super twichy.

-I was addressing the fact of why this ducati didn't come from the factory with a damper. I know that when ridden properly that his particular bike will not see a need for a damper unless.....you are trying to back it in or cut corners on the locks. "twitchy" because you're running too much pre-load and rebound for the forks. "twitchy" because of front tyre pressure, high. "twitchy" happens on anything.

-my speed triple doesn't have a damper, its also absent on the "new" model. there's a reason. tall bars and sport-bike tyres, unless you're out of your league and a good-to-excellent motorcycle guy....you don't need it. dirtbikes with road-rubber still have a pretty narrow tyre profile, which can give shakes. probably due to grip (lack) and transfer of weight. no clue, not my bike or my corner. i ride my way, which for me...works 72.5% of the time.

again, looking to argue. learn me sumthin'.

    Anyways....

    Option 1

    or

    Option 2

That titanium grey is the finish I'd be going with if I chose the Carrozzeria's. Bike will be wearing full DP carbon fairings that I will change over to a "matte" finish, but will keep the parts that were white as full gloss to maintain the "SP" graphics theme.

Lies. He got it to stop shaking. I mean, it was broken in 2 pieces, but it definitely was not shaking.

Truth. All it took was a crash in T8 (I think) to tweak the bike's geometry to stop shaking. Before that the bike would wag its head the whole way down the front straight. After that, the bike never shook its head again. A lot of riders shook their heads looking at the new "sweet numbers" setup that Zack and PK came up with for that bike, though.

The bike is Junk. There is no setup that works no matter how much money you throw at it. Zack would tank slap all the way down the straight every single lap and that was after GMD did everything he could do for it. The best thing he did was throw that thing into a tree and send it to the scrap yard. I'd never put a leg over one for anything other than 35 mph city driving.

Yup. They're fun bikes, but really only good for two things... City/slow twisties and wheelies.

Well... three things if you gotta get a frisbee or cat out of a tree.
