I only have to go through the dealer if I want to finance the bike. I will have around 4100 maybe close to 5000 (after i cancel warranties on the other bike) to go private party. I am a bit reluctant to do that because I am just starting with bikes and would not want to buy a bike beat to hell and have it die on me a few months to a year later

I know it needs parts and when i called he said it just needed the upper fairing. I can tell it needs more than that, upper, windscreen, mirrors, etc. Not sure if he has them or not but I could see myself getting this and fixing it...

no I understand I don't have to, but since you all keep calling me out on that my credit is not the greatest. I have student loans, hospital bills from a while back, things I am in the process of clearing up. I have however had a car loan on my vehicle in good standing since 2008 so my credit may have gone up. However I tried to get a credit card a few months back and was denied. I might call up my bank and see about a loan through them.

I understand where you are coming from and it really really makes sense considering the loan company does not report on good payments only the negative so apparently paying the loan wouldn't help my credit.

I do not believe that is true. As I understand your rating is based on your debt to equity ratio, amount and time length of accounts in good standing...and yes presence of adverse items

If you were denied credit for a loan or credit card it can be for many factors.

If you tell me you have student loans, hospital bills and a car loan...then your debt to income ratio is probably a factor as well.

Toy money is not the same as bill money.

Use your toy money (insurance) to get a decent used bike, use the monthly amount you would have paid on a shiny new bike you know nothing about to pay down your debt. Win, win..

how do the credit reporting agencies know what equity I have? I mean I could have 3 new cars I paid cash for in my yard so how can they do that calculation?

To determine that you would have to know my current income and honestly it outweighs the amount of debt I have, probably around 5k in total debt on my report.

I have 8k equity in my vehicle after taking the loan amount from the current value of the vehicle.

I am not saying you guys are wrong in any way just asking how that could all be factors?

Out of 9 bikes I've had 6 hondas. Out of too many cars I've had 1 honda and it was trouble free. Had 4 jeeps and quality was so so. Guess I've had a brand preferance for bikes and a weird brand preference for cars.

Are you saying that when you applied for credit they did not ask for your income? And your equity does not count....debt to income (ie can you pay the bills you have now).

What you think exceeds your debt is not the same, they have to factor in the cost of living (rent/mortgage etc)

And it does matter and count. Take our word.....once this year!

one last question. A 2006 CBR with 12k miles is listed on CL for $3500, my immediate thought is something is wrong with the bike priced like that as others are listed for around $5-6k.

I just spoke with the owner and asked if he performed all maintenance or if a shop did and his answer was "no I performed the oil changes". I then asked about other maintenance such as valve adjustments, or anything else. He stated all that had been done was oil changes but the bike runs well. I question the "well".

Should I walk away now or is the maintenance thing minor? I ask because I am not sure what a bike would require through that mileage.

In 08-09 I sold an 04 636 for 3500 with nothing wrong with it except for some minor scratches on the side fairing. That price is not unheard of. Take someone that knows bikes along with you to look at the bike if youre unsure.
