Thanks I have no idea what maintenance needs to be done through that mileage. Guess I have got some reading to do because if I do buy this bike I will be doing all the work myself

A good number of the recent Jap bikes are good to 20k or more for valve adjustments.

.....and please don't do that work yourself. The forum already has a headache.

Christ. I wish I were shopping for a bike right now.

Although I seriously don't understand why you have such a hard-on for a CBR6, GSXR-6 and the like. SV650's and Ninja 650's are 99% the fun for 50% of the money. Especially this time of the year.

That SV currently listed here is tits. I won't lie, the thought of raiding the wedding fund for it crossed my mind. Having her leave me would free up a garage bay to store it in.

I just spoke with the owner and asked if he performed all maintenance or if a shop did and his answer was "no I performed the oil changes". I then asked about other maintenance such as valve adjustments, or anything else. He stated all that had been done was oil changes but the bike runs well. I question the "well".

Should I walk away now or is the maintenance thing minor? I ask because I am not sure what a bike would require through that mileage.
These types of deals are out there. My buddy bought one for $2800, it was Mint, 0( orange tribal edition, drove to ny to get it, kid needed to make college payments. I have the same bike, oil changes are all it needs up to 18k at which point the valves should be checked and spark plugs shoukd be replaced along with new coolant and maybe brake fluid, brake pads may need replacing and new tires but deals like this are out there for sure.

This thread is just giving me a headache.

^^ what he said. I just did all this stuff to mine at 20k. before that... gas, oil and tires are all you'regoing to need most likely

also that White 06 CBR you posted is doesn't have factory plastics or paint since white was not a color option on the CBR's till the newer styles

Only thing I'll say about craigslist ads is make sure they have a title in hand or with the bank. You really don't want to buy a stolen bike.

yea a bit nervous about that are people actively forging titles or if they have the title then it's generally good?

If you're going to look at a bike this weekend are you going to have someone who is more knowledgeable come with you? When I bought my first bike I had my friend look it over and even test ride it because I was in the same boat as you. Plus if you are dead set on a certain one friends can steer you away if needed.

Re: Brand Matter or just Preference?

I am not sure if the person will be able to go up with me this weekend or not, chances are not so I will go take a look at the bike solo. The good news, even if I fall in love with the bike I have no way to transport it in my Highlander

With that said I will have to find someone with a truck to help me fetch it for a fee and before that time comes I will have someone look at it with me

There you go. You're making a smart move buying a used bike. Take lots of pics of the bike and tell us what you find out about it.

Not sure about that year but for 2008+ CBR
oil & filter - 8K miles (a bit excessive, but just giving what the manual says)
    air filter - 12 K miles
    brake fluid - 12K miles
    valve clearance - 16K miles
    spark plugs - 16K miles

some other checks along the way but those are the biggies

Re: Brand Matter or just Preference?

Something tells me you also have a car from a dealership because you didn't want to buy a problem'ed car, and wanted a dealer to do all the work.

You do realize that dealers (at least in the car world, but I'm sure the same is true in the bike world) do every little thing possible to make you feel like there is so much work involved? Oh we rotated the tires for you, and checked the brakes, did a coolant flush, and topped off the wiper fluid. Most of which didn't need to be done and took 5 minutes. Get the point?

I'd say the hardest part here is going to be the valve adjustment. And in which case, seems like there is plenty of shop representation on the site here. Take it to one of them, and that labor won't cost you dick compared to interest, new bike smell, and a dealership's smile. I also don't know how common this is with bike shops, but many mechanics will charge a fee check over a bike. Otherwise, as already mentioned, bring a friend who still has oil stains on his hands.

big assumption right there. ANY bike i've bought needed to be gone through with a fine tooth comb. new and used. ive actually had more shit loose or missing from NEW bikes from quality dealers.

As for learning... I WANT to learn, that's the only thing that pisses me off about having a brand new bike under warranty, I can't do half the shit myself without voiding the warranty.
it shouldnt piss you off because its usually not true. keep records, use factory recommended parts and products. good to go.

now if by 'maintenance' you mean new exhaust, ECU gadgets, chop mods, etc. some you can get away with, some you cant. but that's not standard maintenance stuff.

good luck, perfect time to buy a bike.
