BUELL MOTORCYCLE RIDERS PICK TOP 10 TWISTY ROADS
Deal’s Gap in Tennessee Tops Poll of Best Roads for Sport Riding
East Troy, WI -- (Thursday, July 18, 2002) Twisty roads make motorcyclists happy, and the riders of Buell motorcycles know exactly where to go to find a blissful stretch of highway. Buell Motorcycle Company recently published the results of a six-month poll conducted on its website, Buell.com, that asked riders around the country to name their favorite stretch of curves.
Topping the list is the infamous Deal’s Gap, a wildly twisting stretch of US Highway 129 that jams 318 turns into 12 miles of undulating pavement in the Smoky Mountain region between Maryville, Tenn., and Topoco, N.C.
The idea of the Buell Twisty Roads Poll came up when the company was developing its latest creation, the Buell Firebolt XB9R, a high-performance model featuring a host of technological innovations designed specifically to enhance its performance on challenging roads.
“As we were developing the Firebolt, we thought, where would be the best place to take this baby for a ride?,” said Erik Buell, chief technical officer and founder of the company. “It only made sense to offer riders some ideas about where to take the Firebolt and put it to the test, and these are some of the most exciting roads in the country.”
The final poll results name curvy roads in nearly every corner of the United States, such as Virginia’s Blue Ridge Parkway, Million Dollar Highway in Colorado and Angel’s Crest Highway in California. Each caters to riders seeking switchbacks and hairpin turns:
