Re: Building my garage / workshop (56K death)

I had some other obligations this weekend and some bike work so I only did a few garage things.

I Threw a couple more stickers on the workbench and then laid another coat of Super Glaze down. I figure since this is a workbench it's going to get beat up pretty badly... the extra thickness of glaze should help.

Last time I didn't cover it during curing which I didn't think was a big deal, but when little bits of dust touch down in the first few hours after application the dust itself isn't visible but it makes a very visible indentation due to the high surface tension of the liquid. So pouring and spreading the new coat filled all those imperfections, and then I hung a sheet over it to prevent it from happening again (hopefully).

I ordered some swivel leveling feet from Grainger that will go in the bottom of the 4x4s that will serve as two of the legs for the workbench.

A couple photos I picked up arrived. I'm going to get some frames for them and hang them up. One is Valentino Rossi leading Jorge Lorenzo and Nicky Hayden from the 2008 MotoGP race in Laguna Seca CA. The other is a print of an autographed photo of the king of smooth himself, Kenny Roberts.

thinking the same thing, but it's a shame to use such a nice table as a work bench. knowing chris, he's got some crazy clear coat on this so grease will bead off the table

Thanks! I did this second coat just to be safe... added another 1/16th of an inch or so of epoxy on there.

Eh, I buy/make/etc things to use them, not to look at them. This thing's gonna be pimp.

Re: Building my garage / workshop (56K death)

So this weekend I was going to do some work on the bike but decided to backburner it in favor of getting my workbench built. I want to get the garage more organized and get my tools all where I want them, and the workbench is a big step in getting there.

I mounted the workbench top to two 4x4's with 4 lag bolts each, countersunk into the benchtop and then I used the little bit of superglaze I had left to coat those holes.

I mounted the Ikea kitchen base cabinet to the workbench and then used some 1x3 strapping to add some stability to the legs. The adjustable swivel feet I showed before went into the bottoms of the legs and work great.

Next time I go out there I'll grab some bolts and mount my vice to the table since the superglaze will be dry by then.

Here she is, all done except for the vice.

I swept the garage up and now I just need to get all my tools in order and utilize all my chest/drawer space more efficiently.

I also keep forgetting to install the network cable outlet I bought... that way I can have a laptop at the workbench. Need a bench stool too.

Regardless, the garage is now in a state that will allow for lots of work to be done on the bike this winter in preparation for getting it ready for me to race it

Re: Building my garage / workshop (56K death)

Where you only have one large work bench, you may want to mount the vice to a ball mount for a trailer verses taking up space on the bench. Mount a class II 7" extension under the bench. Mount your vice to any class II ball mount. When it comes time to use it, simply plug it in and throw a pin in her. I had my shop setup this way for awhile. I had two 7" extensions mounted just slightly recessed to the front of the bench. My grinder, buffing wheel, vice, and a few other things were all mounted on hitches that I could simply plug in. When not in use (which is pretty often when you think about it) they simply unplugged and stored in a cabinet next to the bench.

Chris I've realized something about your garage. You are missing one vital piece, a stripper pole!

I have a long cat5 cable and an outlet for the bench so I think I'm all set as long as the cable is long enough. I'll let you know though.

    Mark,

That seems like a great modular idea... the only concern I have is the freeplay that is often found in hitches. Isn't there usually quite a bit?

But in order for them to do any high flying pole work, they'd have to be midget strippers. If you google Tiny Tina, you'll find what you're looking for. I actually saw her a few months ago... not bad

After you showed Denno where you live (don't wanna know why), did we ride by said garage Sunday? You 2 had your feet and arms all over the place during the ride so it was hard to tell if you were pointing at something or signaling Denno again, thought I saw the black doors as we rode by?

I've gotta build some work benches this winter in my basement, I've got beer

Well I kinda stopped updating this thread, but if you insist I can dig out a couple pics of stuff that's been gradually added.

A while ago picked up a fridge for under the workbench for 'beverages'.

Had some home depot credit so I picked up this sweet drill press, great for safety wiring:

My best bud just got married and I was the best man... as a best man gift he had this sweet sign made up... pretty cool gift! It's now flanked by two of the greatest riders ever:

The vice was mounted a while ago:

The bike is chilling in there in pieces. It's actually further along than this but I don't have recent pictures:
