Where do you buy your chain lube and cleaner?

My research indicates most people recommended kerosene for cleaning. I went by Advance Auto parts today and they got none. Stopped by Walmart and they only have this stuff and no kerosene. Is this kerosene stuff comes in a spray can?

So I used wd40 instead. First time cleaning the chain after several thousands miles. Hah the chain turned from Black to silver.

I bought kerosene at wal-mart in the camping section...small blue bottle. WD40 works, but isn't the best for o or x-rings, but I've done it too.

I would remove rear wheel, put about an inch of kerosene in larger tupaware container, put container underneath the swingarm and go section by section dipping it in the kerosene and wiping with a cloth.

Once done, I would use a spray on lube, ride the bike getting the chain hot, then apply chain wax and let it kinda bake onto the hot chain to minimize spray next time I road.

This is insanly to much work. Dip a rag into the kero or use WD-40 in a spray bottle. (Buying a 1 gallon jug of WD-40 and then use a spray bottle to apply it for 1/5th of the cost of the spray cans.) And yes, WD-40 is safe for an O-ring. http://www.advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?t=345397

For chain wax, I'd been using the dupont teflon that they just stopped making. So I'm no help there as I still have 2 cans left before I need to think about this again. The biggest thing with chains is being dilligent. 500 miles or 1 rain ride, what ever comes first. 23,000 miles, 6 track days out of my first chain on my Triumph.

    +1

I would also recommend working the chain in a way to remove any debris that a rag can't get to as to reduce any potential binding. You would be surprised at how much crap can get into those little crevices of the chain.

I know it is a pain but this method is really done once or twice a year in my opinion. Your basic 200-400 mile cleaning is a lot easier.

I miss the dupont teflon wax already! I've been using the silicon/teflon stuff as a replacement but it just doesn't stay on like the wax did. Know anywhere to pick up some old stock of the good stuff?

I can't believe they stopped making it! I'll have to run to lowe's or HD and try and buy up a bunch of it. Is the chain saver gone now too?

I have 2 cans of teflon chain saver you can HAVE. That stuff is terrible. I have never had such a mess. It flung so much, it was dripping off of my oil filter and I thought I had a leak.

Maxima chain wax or simply WD-40 in a bind from now on for me.

ok so we have established that WD-40 is ok for o and x ring chains... is PB Blaster also ok then or is that way more corrosive etc than WD??

BTW, check Walmart for the Dupont Teflon chain saver. That's where I got mine and less than 3 months ago.

Re: Where do you buy your chain lube and cleaner?

An O-ring chain is assembled with grease that has EP (extreme pressure) additives and the o-rings (or Quad rings, X-rings, Z-rings) retain that lubricant. When you use petroleum or mineral based solvents you risk washing out that lubricant and replacing it with the solvent. You can never get that grease back in there, and will severely shorten the life of the chain. The chain lubes you use only coat the external surfaces of the chain, and in doing this it retards corrosion, reduces external roller and sprocket tooth wear and helps keep the chain running smooth and quiet.

I refer you to Page 4 of this D.I.D. Chains link for more information.

Clean the chain with WD40 or CRC Power Lube- get it at Autozone, etc. Honda sells the best chain lube IMHO!

wow! by that thread, the WD-40 changed o-ring thickness less than PJ-40 chain lube! 1% vs. 4% is negligible...but interesting results.
