I am not making any claims that the solvents would affect the o-ring life or condition, I'm just suggesting that the solvents can dilute or wash out the grease assembled with the metal parts and held within the confines of the o-ring. Once you get the solvent past the o-rings, I know of no way to get grease back in there. That's all I'm saying.

I have a spray can of Motorex Chain Clean 611 that I bought from KayaraOne (Dave) some 4 years ago. I think I use it (carefully) once a year, if that. Mostly I just wipe it down, lube it up with Motorex 622 Strong and wipe off the excess. Minimal (really!) sling-off, works great.

You can never get that grease back in there, and will severely shorten the life of the chain. The chain lubes you use only coat the external surfaces of the chain, and in doing this it retards corrosion, reduces external roller and sprocket tooth wear and helps keep the chain running smooth and quiet.

I refer you to Page 4 of this D.I.D. Chains link for more information.
