Anyone know a good place to buy a wrecked/salvage chopper specifically Big Dog or American Ironhorse makes? I am looking for something with an intact engine but everything else is open. Just looking for a winter project I think we are in for a long one this year!

There is an ironhorse that has been for sale near me for quite a while. Owner died, son got house and belongings and its just been sitting. I believe it may have electrical problems but can find out more if you want. Let me know and I can make a drive by.

At the risk of being obvious, since the are component or catalog bikes is there a reason you are not pricing out Just the parts you want? None of the Boutique Builders do anything particularly original (with the exception of Bourget Fluids in Frame) I believe it is Big Bear that will sell you a Chopper Kit. If I were going to Build another Paint Shaker I wouldn't start with one that someone already Bent.
That said Stan Lynde of Lynde Motorsports in Brattleboro VT has always got a lead on Choppers

Your best bet is to just buy a new crate engine. Even a wrecked bike with an intact engine will cost you at least as much as a crate engine. S&S 124" twin cams start at $8975. Evo style 124" start at $8074. You can spend less by going with a smaller motor.
Another route is the auctions. If you are in tight with a dealer, you may be able to buy through them. Wholesale values on choppers tanked about 3 years ago.
Yeah I am looking for something that has been twisted and starting from the engine up, perhaps I may just get a frame and engine and start all original. I am feeling the S&S 117
What are you looking to spend
Would probably spend up to 5 k
I have to swing by that guys place. The horse has been sitting there for so long, I wonder if it even runs. It actually had grass grown up around it for most of the summer. Its a blue outlaw I believe. There was a yellow one that he tweaked the frame of. Apparently he looked right, went right and smashed into a boat and trailer. That sat for at least a year before someone took it. I will follow up if I make it there soon.

Yup, they're reliable. Justifiable, depends how big of a boner you have for it. They are made stateside (to the best of my knowledge) so they pay real labor and health insurance.![]()

Justified by how much it costs to make, and how much people are willing to pay. Economics 101. Reliable, I don't know, I've never had one and I don't sell them. Sure, for that kind of money you could get a used liter bike, you could also get a good used car, but that's not what we are talking about.
2 liter engine > 1 liter engine.
I see what you're doing here.
