    Buying out of state

So I'm buying a new bike (giggity) from a dealer in NH, it will only be used IN NH, and will never be registered in MA, however, it will always be garaged in MA. I assume since it wont be registered or anything the great Commonwealth of Massachusetts never needs to know about it, so I dont need to worry about sales tax right? Or should I tell the dealer that it will be always stored at my parents house in NH?
I like trying to work the system, makes me feel like a tough guy.

Don't know, but "working the System" Talk gets you into the thick with some people on here, be prepaired to be bashed as I was just asking for advice!!

Congrats on the new ride, what is it? Is this a track day weapon only or will you be registering it in NH and riding it on the street?

Not sure how it works but I think if you want a title for it you need to go to some registry.

Title = registry = sales tax

Even if you do not plan on registering it.

Not really working the system per se, and those people can eat my ass. But its a track only bike, that will never see the light of day in MA other than being stored in my garage, so I dont see the need to spend the extra money if I dont need to.

So how do NH people do it, if they dont have a sales tax? They still go to a NH registry to get the title?

Oh and i should mention its technically a dirtbike, so I dont even know if they have titles, Im confused how that all works.

    Re: Buying out of state

You will recieve the "Certificate of Origin" from the dealership upon purchase if this is a cash deal.

That is the pre-cursor to a title in any state.

So you may ride the bike on the track to your hearts content and if you ever decide to sell it ,you supply the buyer with the Certificate of Origin and a Bill of Sale and you are good to go.

No need to pay the Mass taxes.

You'll still get a title app for the bike, but if you're using credit to buy it, it'll be titled to the lien holder so you don't have to worry about it till you pay it off anyways.

    Re: Buying out of state

If you are buying it from a "border" dealership they might have the abillity to do Mass paper work, but I doubt it. More than likely they want nothing to do with Ma paper work. When I worked at a dealership we would sell sleds to outer staters a lot because they would never reg it in thier state because they would always ride up north. So it saved them a nice chunck of change.

Most dirt bikes have a certificate of origin, which is realy nothing more than a fancey peace of paper. If you are not putting it on the road than there is no need to get a title for it.

Ill get the pics once I go pick it up, hopefully after work tonight.
But it has made an appearance on the board once or twice, so if you look hard enough, you can find it.

NH is a little screwy when it comes to that. We don't have a sales tax but you still have to pay the town a tax every year when you register or re-register any motor vehicle. That's why it is such a pain in the ass when you first register a vehicle in NH, you have to go to town hall and pay them before you go to the registry and pay them.

yikes, I had a section in highschool where I needed to take a trail that went out onto the side of highway then back into woods to a sandpit we had a practice track on. I had an officer put on his lights and pull off the highway still doing 60mph into the dirt and basically come up next to me...I was so freaked out I thought it was a drunk driver at first

Well, thanks for riding your unregistered illegal bike in NH, making the rest of us look bad.

No wonder riding areas get closed.

    1) it was in MA
    2) this was in highschool when I used to trail ride for like 3 minutes to get to practice tracks. I rode my bike on race tracks for the most part
    3) this was long before everyone started cracking down on riding areas. There is basically nowhere for me to ride now besides my friends track and tracks I pay to ride.

You can also apply for a title in NH without registering, I did it with a old oldsmobile I was selling on e-bay, the guy that bought it needed a title , I contacted the state, no problem I think it cost 60.00 if I remember correctly
