    Buying brand new bike question???

So I have never bought a brand new bike at a dealership..... And probably won't.

But had a question about the process. Is it similar to a car where you can bargain with the dealer? Or is the asking price usually the sale price?

I know with cars you can usually get them rit around invoice pricing. Are dealers similar?

    Thanks for any help.

I haven't found much flexibility in the price but I was able to build some wiggle room by adding options like an exhaust, etc. YMMV

It's going to vary wildly by dealership. There are dealerships that won't budge, those would be the bad dealerships. There are no rules to buying things, everything is negotiable. You just have to be in a position to haggle them down (i.e. a brand new super popular bike won't be discounted, but a brand new super popular car won't be either).

You can absolutely negotiate - just like cars. Anything left over in less demand is going to have more room, the latest and greatest will sell closer to msrp. I have bought 5 bikes brand new and the only one I paid msrp for was a 1098s when you couldn't get one....the rest I did very well on, even my 1200 GSA (BMW usually hard to get a deal on) because it was a model year old...

The dealers that iv worked with don't real change price on new.
Added discounted parts n gear is what u can get out of it usually.
Used bikes through dealer usually u can beat the price a little.
On the other hand on a brand new bike if you know for sure (web, magazine) another dealer in the same area is selling for less 9/10 they ll match it. But I doubt you ll find a difference bigger than $500 on a new bike at two dealerships within the sane zip/county

Re: Buying brand new bike question???

When I bought my 09 V-Strom ABS (a hard to find bike) in November 08, a buddy and I bought two at once, and got around $500 off, each on an $8,000 bike. Of course then the economy tanked and others got even better deals on existing inventory.

Left-over bikes can have pretty big incentives, including discounts, add-on gear, low percentage financing, or all of the above. It appears most dealers have made absolutely minimum purchases of new model year inventory so buying a '12 is probably going to be close to MSRP plus the dealer add-ons for most bikes.

Dealer GP margins are shockingly small, I don't know how most survive, frankly.

When I was selling bikes the only one I never discounted were things like when the new VMAX came out and you had to put down $1000 NON-Refundable deposit to even order one. That was full boat MSRP. Other than that I've been able to discount most bikes and most dealers I worked at had MSRP advertized and then the selling price.

I had one dealer quote me $800 more than another. So yes, price can vary greatly!

Please shop around. If you are paying cash you can usually get a better deal. When paying cash one dealer quoted me msrp (11,200) + fees. I called around and got 10500 OTD.

Second new bike which I financed I sent a quick email and asked if they would do MSRP OTD and they said yes. Seemed fair to me so I took it.

cash means nothing... most dealers get perks for each financed deal

Really? [New] Dealers care about cash?

I thought they got kick backs from lenders for getting people financed. I know I've always got blank stares when I go sniffing for a cash deal.

    What I thought..

I've only bought one new bike. It was already severely discounted and I didn't bother trying for a better price.

I think it depends on their finance department cause I know some car dealers will add onto the interest rate the lender gives. So the dealer gets paid more for selling the same car.

Re: Buying brand new bike question???

I've bought a new bike or 2 in my time and I don't think I have ever bought one without haggling with price..and I have NEVER paid MSRP for any bike. I'm a salesman's worst nightmare, vehicle or bike

Go in educated and know what you want, know the MSRP, factory incentives, and look around online to see what the bike you want is selling for. I've found ebay to be a great starting point.
This information has always given me a general idea what "I" wanted to pay for the bike. I mostly buy Yamaha, and I know the dealer cost with Yamaha is somewhere around 15-18% off MSRP, minus any factory to dealer kickbacks.
If the dealer doesn't want to deal, don't be afraid to walk out. Leave them your number and tell them when they want to sell the bike, give you a call.

Every dealer i have dealt with, paying with cash is no different than financing as far as final price. Those days are long gone!

I had to go to my local dealer today to get a battery for my ATV and the salesman (a friend of mine) got me and walked me over to the new 2012 R1 anniversary edition He put an honest effort in and offered a discount, which wasn't enough to make me think...then mentioned the limited numbered stamp from the factory. I looked at the stamp and asked how much he'd take off the bike if we pulled the stamp off and stuck it to another bike? it was good for a laugh anyways

Go to Great Bay... You don't have to haggle. I haven't had to.
And I've been lucky enough to have the cash to buy the bikes outright.
The guys at Great Bay, Adam Kells or Billy Halberstadt will be happy to cut you a real good deal.
    Alright, alright I am biased.

Re: Buying brand new bike question???

yea - cash in hand to buy the bike ---

I am 99.999% I wouldn't buy new anyways -- I end up selling my purchases WAAY to soon to be the guy to take the initial hit of a new machine.

Just got me thinking when I was at Wagner BMW/Ducati and realized the 796 hyper is only $9995 - I was wondering if they would entertain 9K cash for a brand new bike --

    Just curious -

on a side note - supposed to be nice out tomorrow - another great day for a ride looks like!

Yeah, it was a while ago. Hopefully they've changed their sales tactics since! Because that HUGE of a price difference turned me off that place for good!

I can't remember the dudes name that I talked with. I stopped by and he said he'd call me back later with a price. I damn near drove off the road when I heard how much they wanted!

I see you have a Tiger Explorer on order.
