    C'mon...you can do better.
But calling a guy out for crashing...that's almost as bad as calling somebody out for having to be a novice again.

A monster 696 would be a great choice.

Do you plan to ride a lot around BU?

Guess I was wrong. I assumed for two reasons 1 MSF and 2 not knowing anything about registering a bike.

TunerType, who posted the question, was about to get all high and mighty about a first bike choice. This is the same guy who used to have like 9 bikes in his sig, but still can't make it all the way through a track day without binning the fucking thing.

When you can confidently pilot the bike you own, you can judge what other people intend to buy.
I wasn't really going to get "high and mighty" about it and don't think you need to start on a 250. But starting on a super aggressive european bike might not bread the most confidance in a noob. The OP had a second thought about the bike after researching it. I think a 1000 is loads easier to ride than a 600 and ergos play a bigger role in how comfortable you are on a bike than how much power you get per throttle opening. Although as you mentioned I followed the teared bike progression.

    Re: Buying Second hand Bike

As a daily driver in town, I wouldn't point you towards an 848 Evo. I haven't ridden the 848 Streetfighter, but if it's in a similar tune as the big one, it should be a bit milder, smoother at low revs and throttle openings, and have more relaxed ergos. The Monster 696 as pointed out is also an awesome all around mount.

I also wouldn't get scared off by 'high maint costs' on a Duc unless you're talking to someone who actually currently owns one. The stereotype about them being costly has persisted for years despite it just not being true.

Of course, I also miss my CBR250R and had no qualms about riding on it all day, it was perfect for in town use also...

I think the Monster 696 is a great choice for riding in the city. A Triumph Street Triple would also be excellent. I ride into the city pretty regularly on my Street Triple and it's just a perfect urban machine.

Good point, and good reason to stay away from European bikes.

If I were in his situation, there would only be 3 choices...an R6, or an R6, or an R6

Or maybe you could just give him some constructive advise, after all he was smart enough to know what he doesn't know and to seek help from others who supposedly do.

I really don't come around here very often anymore, and I remember why within a few hours each time I come back.

Leo, I say, get what suits you. What you like and what you want to ride. With that said, make sure you consider the price, the likelihood of a drop, the type and area you plan to ride, what your type of riding is, your skill level, the cost of insurance maintenance and repair,...and respect the power of whatever you choose. You still (like us all) have a lot to learn. My advise would be to start with a 600cc maximum, and something more mainstream and readily available (making is less expensive to purchase and insure).

In Boston these days, Ducatis are the "starter bike" of choice. You see them all over Southie. Triumph Bonnevilles are also popular. Because everybody else has Ducatis.

Don't forget a flat black FF helmet!

    Re: Buying Second hand Bike

Actually, a slightly used Triumph Bonneville is a great suggestion. They take the initial hit on value with the first owner, then stay pretty steady. A Suzuki SV650 is another good choice, probably easier to find. I don't see a lot of Bonneville's for sale, but see a lot more of them out on the road than ever before.

Aside from the fact this guy has only ridden smaller bikes it seems, Busas are fine touring rigs.

They are pretty comfortable, I hear, despite their bad rep. Note, I have never owned one, just going on second-hand info.

I would second a monster 696, or one of the 650s (ninja or SV). Easy to find, buy low, sell for same price in a year. plenty of power for the twisties, easy enough to ride in traffic.
